Narrowing the car lanes intentionally slows traffic and improves safety. The benefit to you is making it less likely you'll get a photo-enforcement ticket on the downhill.

I don’t care. It was awful and a large percentage of us in the surrounding neighborhood hated it. Glad they ripped out the worst of it. They should have left it alone. Total waste of our tax dollars.

Every single elected representative of the surrounding neighborhood disagrees with you, but please do carry on with your ridiculous claims about local sentiment as it exposes you for the clown that you are.

How many of those elected representatives ran unopposed?

Bike-lane advocates need to stop trotting out this stupid ANC argument. First off, no one cares. Secondly, claiming someone who ran unopposed or won with 100 votes has some sort of mandate is profoundly dumb. Third, ANC reps have zero actual power. It’s the student government of DC, filled by the the dorks who were hilariously overserious about student government in high school.

What do you say to those who complain about the government despite not having bothered to vote? Whatever that is, think about it long and hard.

DC law mandates that ANC resolutions must be given great weight by DC government agencies. That the heads of some DC government agencies are choosing to give greater weight to the ill-informed views of certain non-resident property developers and real estate agents should concern everyone who gives a damn about the rule of law.

I've attended a few meetings about these bike lanes. The opponents were also heavily outnumbered by those who were supportive.

That's how all special interest groups work. How do you think the NRA gets its way on gun issues? They show up for the legislative meetings that no one else even knew were happening.

What do you say to those who complain about the government despite not having bothered to vote? Whatever that is, think about it long and hard.

If you don't know when ANC meetings are held and how to join them, that's on you. Ignorance and/or laziness are not traits you be proud of.

No!

Why can’t you stupid MAGAs understand that bike lanes need to be widened? (not narrowed!!)

Sorry you can’t afford a car Karen.

Stop trying to make the ANCs into something they are not.

I am sorry that DC is not set up as a state and that there is no legislature to fulfill people's political ambitions but that doesn't mean that we should pretend that an ANC is equivalent to a Representative. They're voluntary positions designed to take constituent services off the hands of Council members ffs.

Instead of trying to backdoor them into something inportant why don't you put your efforts into reforming the structure of the Council.

ANCs are unique to DC, which is perhaps why folk who don't live in DC have a hard time getting their head around them.

ANC members may be elected, but it’s a bit of a stretch to say their seats truly reflect the will of the people. In the last election, most of the candidates in my ANC ran unopposed, not because they had overwhelming neighborhood support, but because hardly anyone wants to take on the job. Citywide in 2024, about 80% of ANC seats were either uncontested or had no candidates at all, and roughly 30% of voters skipped the ANC question on the ballot. So, in many cases, commissioners end up in office not because they won over their neighbors, but because no one else ran.

Nobody cares what ANCs think about bike lanes or cars or single family homes or climate change or Gaza or the Fed neutral rate or the Armenian genocide. That's not their jobs. They are there to provide constituent services, like getting someone to pick up the dead cat in the road.

Bowser ran virtually unopposed in 2018. Did you spend the next four years questioning her legitimacy?

No, they are not. But I hope there are multiple dead cats in the road in front of your house that go uncollected because you call your ANC rep instead of DC 311.

That is literally why they were created. To help citizens navigate government bureaucracy.

Being persistently wrong is a pastime of yours, is it?

While some commissioners may provide such services out of the goodness of their heart, helping out residents who can’t dial a three digit number or find their council-members email does not fall within their job description - which happens to be exactly what you insist it isn’t:

“Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners advise the District government on matters of public policy including decisions regarding planning, streets, recreation, social services programs, health, safety, and sanitation in their respective neighborhood commission areas.”

Oh brother. In the pecking order of DC government, ANCs are below the interns who work in the communications office of the Department of Energy. No one cares what they think about anything, and no one should.
