That said I have a DD named Kate (not a nn). She is a young adult now who says that while she likes the name Kate, Katherine would have given her more options. So your LO might prefer to be Maria (nn Mia) for options later in life.

Mia is not a nickname for Maria. Actually it’s not even a nickname at all. It’s short but it’s a standalone name. And there is no tv show called Roxanne.

I have an Amelia and some people try to shorten it to Mia.

+1
Roxanne is in the same prison cell with Candi and Chantelle.

+2 Roxanne has had a tough life.

AI:Mia is commonly a nickname for names like Maria, Amelia, and Emilia. It can also be used as a standalone name with various meanings across different cultures.

I actually think Mia Roxanne is darling. I'd do that.

Overall, Mia is a classic, multicultural beauty. Roxanne is sparky and spirited. So I would make lists of names in both categories and see if you two can agree on any of them. A couple that jumped out:

Mia: Lydia, Sasha, Fiona, Chloe, Nina, Claudia

Roxanne: Jaime, Bridget, Callie (could get this from Caroline, Calliope, etc.), Ruthie, Natalie

IDK, my Roxanne list isn't that good. Do you see what I'm saying, though?

Don't name your kid Calliope.

Calliope is really cute, it was on our short list.

I have to ask though, do you know how it's pronounced? It's kal-EYE-oh-pee. Not KAL-ee-ope. I have discovered recently that some people don't realize this about certain Greek names and therefore think names like this are ugly or unpleasant when they are actually musical and classic.

Are you really smart-splaining to DCUM? You know people on here have 2 more PhDs and 3 more continents they've been to. Also they are published. Please don't smart-splain here. It's embarrassing.

There are so many idiots on this website.

The nickname for Roxanne is Roxie, which is also the nickname of a pill abused by drug addicts. I like the name but wouldn't use it because of that association

Mia is nice

Maybe keep looking to find a name you both love

People will call her Roxy.

Mia is a million times better.

My kid's name is Molly, also a nickname for a drug but love the name anyway and want to honor my grandmother- fortunately 2 year olds don't know drug names

We made an excel list of names

Names he liked, names I liked, then we had a list of possibilities .
We were then able to pick something we both really liked.
But yes I think the name must be liked by both , even though you are carrying it..after all he is also a part this baby.

- ivf mom , and I struggled a lot but believed the name had to be what we both liked.

Roxanne is a trashy name and Mia is a bit basic. I would go with a name like Nora, timeless but not too common.

Maybe try Jazzy?

Maxine?

I also like the earlier suggestion, Mia Roxanne-- nn Moxie.

Beatrix nn Trixie

Mia is ranked #5 and Nora is ranked #22. So yes less common but not by much. I also suspect that Mia's popularity concentrated among Spanish speakers so if your kid lives in an area that isn't majority Spanish speakers, Mia may actually be less common than Nora. The only Mia I know is 11 (and she is mixed race and the name was chosen by her Latina mom). Whereas I know a half dozen Noras under the age of 10.

Roxanne is not ranked in the top 1000 but I've seen it mentioned more and more on naming websites and I think it's having a resurgence. Most people under the age of 40 (which will include the vast majority of new parents, their kids, teachers, and coaches -- so the people this child is most likely to interact with) won't associate it with the Police song.

I like Roxanne a lot more than Maxine, which unfortunately makes me think of maxi pad. I'd be worried about her getting the nn Maxie which would make me cringe every time even if no one else made that association.
