Not For Profit organizations. Every high school kid used to have one, curing diseases, saving the planet, tutoring the poor kids. |
I’m skeptical that many of you are talking to teenagers. There are far fewer teenagers in the DMV working in retail type jobs than in decades past. And as for college admissions, I’m going to disagree with the snark above. Many kids don’t mix with people of different ages. Working in the crepe place, dealing with the public demonstrates a lot more resilience and tenacity than an “internship” your parent or neighbor got for you. |
+1. I hope jobs last for a while. Those mission trips just show you have parents who can fund mission trips (and I say that as a parent who can and is willing to fund one). |
Its not that easy to get a good internship. What's wrong with working? Mine work as lifeguards and get $18 an hour in HS... |
+1 mine worked in the tourism/hospitality industry in high school. Has an internship this summer but I was also encouraging them to apply for summer work in retail/tourism/food service. Mainly to get them out of the house, around other people. And so they could learn the ways and expectations of the workplace. |
lol this reminds me of one my daughter’s classmate started. It was for kids in Nepal. She started an Insta and only had one post with a picture of maybe 20-25 Nepali kids holding a huge banner thanking her. No context. No one knows what she did. My guess is she sent them a banner to hold and pose. It was weird. Just before app deadlines, she took down the account. |
Not for profit? Are you saying that they’re working low paying jobs and you feel that they’re entitled to more? Like only immigrants should be working those jobs? I don’t get it. |
I’m Indian-American and in India, it’s unthinkable for a well-to-do high school or college student to be waiting tables or bagging groceries. Some of us who grew up in the US faced pushback from our parents for wanting to work at the mall during the summer. They felt we should be focused on academics and encouraged summer school. Fast forward z30-40 years and I’m all for having my kid wait tables or lifeguard or scoop ice cream because that offers a type of education that one can’t get in the classroom. |
I'm guessing not for professional!?

This has to do with caste system, under which waiting tables are jobs for Shudras. India immigrants are of higher classes, the idea of waiting tables and bagging groceries are unthinkable for their classes. |
