DC ladies Fashion is TERRIBLE

I've noticed that professional African-American women are usually much sharper dressers.

DC is “preppy”

Preppy clothing is mainly part of
the body language among women who
are married or who do not need to
establish themselves with an appearance
that has instant impact.

Preppy clothing says "I am not a
threat. I am sexless and safe. I am a
woman's woman."

Glamorous clothing says "I am a threat. I like men, sex, and me. I am serious about
relationships and if you do not take care of yourself to keep your man interested, I
may get him.”

We prefer to be preppy here.

I'm an immigrant from one of the looks-focused countries, but I've lived here for 25+ years. Here's my observation, not a judgment, take it for what it's worse. I think DC professional women dress mostly to be inoffensive. They are fearful of attracting attention based on their appearance. And to my eye, this has nothing to do with excess makeup, logos or tight/revealing clothing. I find that professional women here are afraid of bolder lines and properly cut silhouettes. You can wear the same two-piece suit but a suit made of good fabrics cut to fit your figure (not encase it like a sausage but, like, really FIT - the right skim, the right length, the right shoulder and waistline, etc.) will look completely different from a suit whose main purpose is merely to cover parts of your body with fabric. That's the best I can describe it.

This topic comes up all the time and this is the best response.

I'm an immigrant. Maybe not from a looks-focused country, since I have no idea what those might be. It's a country with a lot of designers sold here, so maybe? Can someone enlighten me?

Denmark/Germany/UK: not focused on looks

Russia/Ukraine/Colombia/Korea: focused on looks

No one cares what you think OP

It's too damn hot and humid to care about dressing up. Make up will melt right off a minute you step out.

When it's not hot and miserable I will wear athletic clothes because I'm making up all the outdoor activity time I missed sitting in air conditioning.

Especially not these days. Fashion falls so far down the list with all the horrible things happening.

It's not better in the fall or winter though.

Not true. But to be fair, it doesn't take much to make a man look great. A nice suit, nice leather shoes a nice tie. He can wear the same thing daily and the styles rarely change.

So TRUE! All men need is a great barber and they go from a 2 to a 10. A nice fitting shirt and tailored pants, the right color shoes and they’re done.

Lol the men here do not look great.

Most people are hopeless with fashion in America in general. And most people you see in DC don’t prioritize their looks which I don’t always think is a bad thing unless it starts to skew in the direction of wearing pajamas and/or underwear outside.

This x 1000. Last thing you want is to be seen as someone trying to “sleep her way to the top.”

IMO, these women think they’re doing themselves a favor but they really aren’t. If it has to do with trying to be taken seriously at work, it has nothing to do with your clothes. It’s your gender. Wearing a J Crew frock and ballet flats isn’t going to decrease the wage gap between men and women.

What’s wild is it’s not even a married vs single vs dating thing. Everyone seems to dress the same. Lane Bryant to the max
