Agree Putnam County Spelling Bee was terrific. That is the best (and kind of only) thing KC had going...Broadway Center Stage. And then Legally Blonde got canceled. And now I'm guessing Center Stage won't exist anymore. |
So far they have censored very little and the issue is rather people/shows refuse to perform there. Finn and Gay Man's Chorus got canceled by KC. They let the Conan Mark Twain award ceremony continue where they were extensively slammed during it. The upcoming season might not be exciting but it's also not that censored. So yes, comparing it to 1930s Germany is projection. |
The last 4 years 2020-24 repeated 1930s Germany with a little bit of Mao thrown in for good measure. |
Is boycotting the National Symphony Orchestra really the thing that’s going to make a difference, though? If the Kennedy Center goes down, Trump wins. If the Kennedy Center succeeds, Trump wins. This is a no win scenario where the KC employees are in the crossfire. |
It's not. It's performative to boycott the KC and I think people are also worried about being judged by their We Believe lawn sign neighbors. |
"Mrs. Doubtfire" is a kids story! |
I’m excited for that one! |
I have LGBTQ family members so I’m walking the talk not being performative. I’m not supporting anything that is openly discriminating against people I love. |
If boycotting, the KC is the ONLY thing you are doing to resist this awful administration then sure that is performative. But many of us are doing so many things to only fund and support initiatives, places, people who support human rights for all. |
Thanks. This encapsulates well how Trump operates and manipulates things. Ugh. |
You're making zero difference other than causing people in the arts to lose their jobs. KC isn't going anywhere. It might go dormant for a while and shed employees because people don't go. But it will still be there. |
I have relatives and friends who are musicians at the KC. Boycotting the KC just plays into Trump’s hands for him to liquidate the KC and its performers. Very short sighted of people to do exactly what he’s hoping. |
I do think it's performative to boycott and a lot more complicated than people are making it out to be and I don't need your resume of all the things you are doing. That doesn't change my opinion. To me the difference here is it's not like KC is a corporation where ownership is on the "wrong" side of the issues. Blameless people at KC are caught up in a political stunt and furthermore, most of these people will not find other jobs in the arts in the area. How many symphonies are there or venues of this size to program in this area? Zero.

I'm boycotting TKC and canceled our Circles membership. |
The musicians and artists can find other venues. I'll continue to support them, but not at TKC probably ever again. |
