bathroom fans - should they vent through the roof?

And then get a roofer in a couple years to fix the leaks.

Putting holes in roofs is serious business, not something most handymen are up to.

Today's code is that they have to vent outside; pretty much everything built before the mid 80's will have it vented into the attic (which was to code then). Honestly it probably not worth the effort to deal with until you do a reno.

Not correct.
Moisture problems that can cause mold in attic.

If the roof has overhangs the best place for them to vent is the soffit, the horizontal space on the bottom of the overhang. If there aren't soffit's available then a wall is the next choice.

Good post about not wanting to penetrate the roof.

Venting into the soffits isn’t to code anymore. It brings air into the bathroom from the outside which can cause condensation depending on the dew point when not in use.

And when in use it expels the moist air into the attic assuming there is a corresponding ridge vent.

Best option is side wall.

Through the roof is fine if properly done. Ours are through the roof.

+1

Into the attic, no, but through the attic to the roof is fine.

When we redid our roof, we added a bathroom fan. No issues, been at least 14 years.

Our house is from 2018 and it vents through a thingie in the side wall from the attic. Seems like a pretty good option.
