I was that kid (and still am. I read textbooks for fun in middle age).

My kids aren't like that but one of my nephews is.

Yes, they do exist. My 17 year old does this. Spoiler alert -they are on the autism spectrum.

Look at olympiad kids. Some are pushed by their parents, but at the highest level, almost all are self motivated.

Mine too. He would buy math books on EBay to work through.

He's getting a PhD in math now.
