What is NOT ugly architecture?

I don’t even think you like the sears homes or the four square. You just think it’s cool to say that. Those homes are like the uggs of the time. They were literally factory made. You’re trying way way too hard.

Mid century modern house.

No, we can't. Many [Mccraftsmens] are attractive and have features contemporary buyers want. Whether they are affordable is another question. But not everyone wants a little square house with a carport and small rooms built in the 40s or 50s.

Provide examples.

No, I actually like those styles. I find a lot to appreciate in different styles and time periods, and I find people who only like on specific style of architecture to be insufferable. FWIW I love my Uggs.

Check out “McMansion Hell”. It’s hilarious and does a great job of explaining why certain builds just look completely incongruous and others are “beautiful.”

McCraftsmen are a huge improvement over the first generation brick facade/vinyl sides McMansion. At least they are finished on all four sides and are generally symmetrical and proportionate.

It is mostly just a snarky website where a woman insults houses.

Many people cannot afford an architect and custom home builder. Many people do not care about these things. Many people just want enough space for their kids to have a bedroom and somewhere to play.

The woman who runs the website is just being a jerk.

No, there are actual architectural principles explaining why some houses are ugly or not, and she does a great job explaining them. For example:
https://mcmansionhell.com/post/148605513816/mcmansions-101-what-makes-a-mcmansion-bad

You don't have to agree with her on everything (I don't) but it is overall an educated and principled approach. It's just easier to read than a textbook.

Most people buy houses that aren't custom, which is why poor design is so inexcusable. A builder or professional architect should understand these principles, but so many don't even try. It's not the buyer's fault.

I hate Frank Lloyd Wright. That whole style just depresses me. I get seriously depressed at the windows (and the seals?) in MCM.

I like a nice Tudor. I adore a staircase that bends up a wall. Wendy's house in Fish Called Wanda? Yes please.

It's not "just being a jerk" to criticize poor architecture (or materials, or landscaping, or food, ...).

You are not defending the quality of the architecture; you acknowledge "Many people do not care about these things". If quality and aesthetically pleasing are not as important to you as "just want enough space", fine. You do you. The criticism of inferior quality is still valid criticism.

You should visit Fallingwater. Perfect for a day trip. You might change your mind, or at least see FLW in a more nuanced way.

What's an example of windows and seals that seriously depresses you.
