Splitting cost of AirBnb

We just split it by family but each family is the same size

I guess by bedroom with families paying the cleaning fee and buying them bulk of the food.

But there are usually significant differences in the assigned bedrooms, so this doesn't always end up being fair.

The single people are in smaller rooms/beds and the families with 2 rooms will each have a king bed in one of their rooms, so I think that will seem fair that those families chip in a bit extra on top of just the bedroom split.

Caution: it’s not just a bit extra—it’s a lot extra.

The king bedroom with the private fancy bathroom overlooking the ocean is worth triple what the crummy single bedroom with the shared bathroom is worth.

This should not be decided on a random basis. The additional benefits of particular rooms may be worth more to some people than others. You need to create a market to reveal the appropriate price.

You start off allocating the rooms randomly. Then you let people bid for the nicer rooms, with the amount they put in being shared by the others. That way you end up with a pareto-optimal solution.

I never did this, but I remember one poster who shared what they did that seemed fair.

Per person but kids count as .5 person.

So it recognizes that the bigger family is taking up more space, etc. but that the kids are usually in lesser/shared rooms and also eat less (usually).

PP. And couples who are paying "double" should obviously get a better room than someone who has just one person in the bedroom.

Just do like my SIL and beat everybody to the house so you can claim the best room with no discussion.
