How will OP provide personal defense? If someone punches you, will you whip out a gun out of your purse and shoot them in the knee caps as they are running away? Guns are illegal in DC. What else honestly would work for those who aren't afraid of our justice system or those mentally unhinged other than fear of getting shot?

Guns are not illegal in DC anymore.

Honestly, with the first line of OPs first message, I thought I could see why you got punched in the face. You live in a city. How did they know you had a phone. I see so many people walking down the street looking at their phone and not paying attention. My first thought is - they are going to get robbed.

This is a terrible excuse and you are trying to blame the victims instead of actually address the problem which is the antisocial violent criminal that needs a minimum of 10-20 year jail sentence for this terrible behavior. This basically doesn’t happen in other countries that have functional Justice system that hold criminal accountable. Look at the crime rates in South Korea, Japan or Singapore

The good news is that you are alive. The bad news is that since two recall drives have likely failed this year you can expect an even less safe DC. We’re moving.

Catch and release prosecutors and under funded police departments mean that you are your own first responder in 2024.

If you understood the recalls would have resulted in any measurable change in crime, as opposed to more effective policing, a greater number of prosecutions and significant changes at the federal probation and supervisory agencies, maybe Fredneck might be a good place to relocate.

Contact your councilmember. They can help you access money from the crime victims fund. They also have a separate fund for constituents that could be helpful.

This is the best answer. I’d also contact the at large CM’s offices.

I have a friend who received therapy from the city after her assault- it was helpful for processing.

OP, have you thought of shaming the Council? Take this to the media - shame them..maybe they will enact measures that protect citizens better .

Under funded police departments? MPD has more officers per capita than nearly any other major city in the US. Funding is not the issue.

Petulant right wing cops who don't want to do their jobs to spite liberals who wouldn't "back the blue" (despite "defunding" never even happening) are the actual problem.

No.

But you can do what many are doing -- leave. Move away.

Do you also expect women that wear short skirts to be raped? Because that just city living, amirite?

DC crime has gotten out of control because the liberal govt refuses to enforce the law and prosecute criminals. I was just punched in the face and had an orbital fracture by a random perp who wanted my phone. My medical bills due to the ordeal are through the roof. Can I sue the DC govt because they've failed at their basic job of ensuring public safety, and as a result, I received nasty injuries that have caused significant bodily and financial harm? Maybe if more individuals sued the govt for failing their basic job then they'd get tougher on crime. We pay them all their taxes, so if they're not ensuring public safety, where's it all going?

No offense, but you sound really whiny. I don’t think you’re cut out for living in a city.

Not the original poster. You are ridiculous and exemplify the mindset of the people running DC. This is exactly why the city has turned into a haven for lawlessness and dysfunction.
This person is complaining because someone attacked and fractured their skull. They are not being whiny and are justifiably angry that the city is failing to protect people from violent criminals. DC cares more about violent criminals and murderers than the honest hardworking residents that keep the city functioning.

You sound even more whiny than the OP. Both of you are totally lacking in city living skills.

I don't live there, My community is very safe because it does not invite crime, dysfunction and reward anti-social behavior. Have fun in your urban wasteland.
