How so? Does an OOS humanities kid with great grades (4.0 with lots of rigor) and ECs but mid 1400 SATs have a shot at Michigan for a humanities major in A&L? What about an OOS with great grades (almost 4.0 with lots of rigor) and ECs but low 1400s SATs who wants to do exercise sciences in Kinesiology have a shot? I have twins who are both interested but both are having a hard time getting to 1500 on the SAT (neither can seem to finish the damn test....).

The Kinesiology may be the sticking point if it's a limited access major. One parent on here this spring reported their child was offered a winter start. They were seriously evaluating it. It meant you couldn't start school elsewhere or take classes during fall semester (I think because that messes up financial aid.)

My advice is to have great reasons why U of M, apply as early as possible, etc. I'm not sure whether to recommend TO or not. Also try to have them meet a regional admissions officer. E-mail to find out when they might pass through the region to a fair. Also, if true, ask your counselor (at app submission time) to let the AO know directly it's your kids' top choice.

We are in-state, my child was accepted to LSA with a 1430 for a social science major.

There were more apps to U of M this year than graduating in-state h.s. seniors. Only a small fraction of in-state kids go to Ann Arbor.

Kinesiology is generally a winter start.

Thanks for clarifying. The parent seemed weirded out by the spring offer. So I thought it was worth mentioning. There is another new major in the architecture school that has a winter start and it seems like it's having trouble getting applicants because of that.

However, the Ivy admits are usually the ones with a big hook and the Michigan admits tend to have high stats and more normal high school ECs (as opposed to the impressive passion project, non-profits, tutoring companies, etc.).

I don’t think a less popular major will get you in but it may act as a tie breaker - DC did apply for niche major but had the track record to back it up

The stats to the music and arts school are much lower than the general school profile.

Try getting into those schools without talent.

Huge mistake. Find away to change that.

I’m the biggest booster for Michigan on here, but that’s just a plain nasty comment. Wisconsin is never a mistake, let alone a huge one. A perfectly reasonable reason to attend Wisconsin over Michigan, or any highly ranked school, is $$$.

I thought Michigan no longer considers legacy in admissions. Am I mistaken?

20 Nobel prizes, 41 Pulitzer Prizes, 2 fields medalists and 39 members in the national academy of science. All of which is leading with Michigan. Not that Michigan is worse, but it is embarrassing that a school in a farmland is beating a school in a metro area of 5.5 million people in these categories……
