You’re slow.

Stop the naps once preschool ends for the summer. Do an early dinner and bedtime. Like bed at 7pm if necessary.
If you can swing it I would try and do a sitter instead of aftercare. That makes for a long day for a 5yo.

He falls apart around 3 or 4, K is over around 3 and they are home by 4. What's the problem?

If he goes to aftercare tell those people he might need a nap there.

This is what we did for both my kids who seemed to need a nap. They adjusted, but we were firm in an earlier bedtime.

We did this also after DC's school dropped naps.

I had a child like this. We ended up dropping all after school activities for the first half of kindergarten because he was so tired after school (for the first few weeks of school, he fell asleep in the car on the way home or to whatever activity we had planned so we just stopped them until he was doing better after school). He also slept for 2-3 hours on weekend afternoons until first grade.

If I could do it over again, I would have stopped the nap in the summer before kindergarten and started putting him to sleep at 6:30pm at least two weeks before school started.

I meant to write two months, not two weeks.

DD5 was like this, she still takes a nap on the weekend! Her birthday is at the end of August and I wanted to hold her back, but sent her to see how it goes. First month was a little hard, she'd come home hangry, would eat a meal and go to sleep on the couch. Wake up 2 hours later and be fine. It took her 1 to 2 months to get used to the long full day of kindergarten. But, she's been doing great and loves going to school and we're at the end of the year and didn't pull her. My other kids K teacher had a nap time everyday, but DD teacher does not. We're in MCPS. Send DC and see how it goes, he might surprise you.

How are his other skills? Reading? Numbers? Writing his name? K isn’t the same K that we went to, they expect a lot now. I remember napping in K

Have you lost your damn mind? You kid should not have been wearing a diaper at night at that age.
Reading, writing name, etc is not obligatory to start kindergarten nor is it expected.

You haven't been on a KG class room lately or your children are too young for you to know any better that this is not true. Writing name definitely and the beginning of reading before KG.

Also, night training can be separate from being potty trained. Even older kids are sometimes needing pull ups for several years.

The kids are not all reading and writing before K. Definitely not true.

Kindergarten teacher here and writing name and reading is absolutely not true in the vast majority of beginner kinder. Some may be able to do this, but is not at all the expectation That is what kindergarten is for to learn to do those things.
Pp could not be wrong wrong.

We were similar, and freaking out about it (to be frank in retrospect) and then suddenly one day in the late spring of preschool she just didn't take a nap and never did again. it will happen before you know it (and you'll lament the time when you had that 90 minutes to yourself-ha!)

I'd plan for dinner at 6, in bath at 6:30, in bed at 6:45. I'd begin to transition to that schedule soon. I had to do a lot of batch cooking and weekend meal prep to stick to the schedule but it all worked out.

With a July birthday, do you have any other concerns that would make you consider redshirting? I redshirted 1 of mine with summer birthdays and not the other. One had fine motor challenges and just seemed to need a bit more time in many ways. Go with your gut, OP.

Kids who are wet at night wear a diaper or a pullup. Are you aware of other options? It is quite common for kids this age to wet at night.

Being dry at night has nothing to do with school readiness. Zero.

Agreed. My 11 year old whose report card read (and typically reads along these lines) “she is a natural leader” and “she’s a very strong student” needed a night pull-up to about 8.5 years. My 7 year old DD still struggles with school in many ways but was out of pull ups by age 4.
