Try Virginia Beach instead |
I dislike Va beach and the drive is too long. See recent thread about this beach not started by me. |
Great to hear this! ILs booked a house there in July and we are going down. |

Link to Bethany Beach webcam with a view of the “replenished” beach. Lol. As someone who has spent countless years visiting all the local beaches, I can report that the beach in front of the Bethany Boardwalk will never be like it was when I was a kid. It’s a sliver and crazy crowded all summer long. |
Have you actually been down there recently? I was there several months ago and saw it firsthand. The beach has been replenished. If your issue is that the beach is crowded, maybe pony up for a beach house a few blocks away from the main street. If you’re rolling up to the public beach right in front of the bandstand and acting surprised that that’s the most crowded part, no one here can help you. |
Bethany is yuck Full of maga My lovely home one block off beach I sold because of all the insane people Rehoboth is so much better. |
??? The link is to a live webcam showing what the beach looks like *right now*. And yes, I go to the beach regularly throughout the year. The beach is a sliver compared to what it used to be. Re: crowding - They overbuilt in Ocean View and Millville and now it is literally shoulder to shoulder on the beach. I don’t go on the beach by the boardwalk anymore unless it’s around dusk and we are meeting friends (the kids like to run around the boardwalk with friends while the adults hang out on the beach after the crowds leave). The parking is horrific and the crowds aren’t worth it. It’s sad how the sleepy little beach town was ruined by overdevelopment. It was so different way back when. Sigh. |
The rehoboth boardwalk is just as trashy as the OC boardwalk. The only difference is you occasionally see a preppy family from Kensington or Olney who looks out of place and a bit shell shocked by the tattooed masses. |
Has this been renovated recently? It used to be gross and would not meet OP's specifications. |
Op again. Thank you. It sure won’t meet my needs. Clearly we have different standards and my original post was not read! |
LOL. OP here. I would be the shell shocked and out of place one. The first time I saw the beach (sand and water) at OC I was truly appalled and disgusted. I’ll leave the people part out of my comment and you can extrapolate my views based on the beach issues. My fav spots are Seven Stars Turks and Caicos, 7 Mile Beach Grand Cayman and the Vineyard. Thus my concern about where I stay. |
OP again. I’m from MA so my first beaches were in the Cape. As I write this maybe I’ll go for 1 night and see how it is. Thanks all. |
+1 One of my greatest pleasures every August is sitting out on the balcony of our high-floor room at the Ocean City Hilton in the late afternoon, with an orange crush in my hand, watching the ocean waves. |
I’m no fan of OC, but what about the sand and water is appalling and disgusting? |
We get it, OP, you’re a beach snob, but people are genuinely trying to be helpful. You’re looking for luxury where it doesn’t really exist. You’re asking for the best mosque in Vatican City or the raciest strip club in Saudi Arabia or the tallest sky scraper in Wyoming. People are giving the best suggestions—seriously, the Henlopen Hotel is as clean, modern, and beach-front as you’re going to get in Delaware—and you’re rolling your eyes, claiming we don’t get you. You want a beach 2.5 hours from your house? These are the accommodations you’re going to find.
I happen to love the Delaware beaches, and I’m thrilled to camp at Cape Henlopen or share a VRBO and buy my kids Grottos and Candy Kitchen and enjoy all the people watching on the boardwalk. |
