teachers and absences

I teach middle school and have a lot of students with IEPs and 504s. I am often the one who gets chosen to go to their meetings.

My favorite was a parent who wouldn’t let me leave the IEP meeting after my part was done to get me to go back to my class (a class with 8 students with documented disabilities who really need my help), but when I missed 30 minutes of the class that her precious child was in for a different meeting she threw a fit that I was neglecting her son’s education.

Why is a teacher's attendance any of your business OP? Do you think leave of everyone in every profession should be public knowledge?

I mean if they're your kids teacher why wouldn't you be concerned if you are dealing with a sub......

Because it's none of our business?

When my child's teachers are out often, I am not concerned about the fact there is a sub but am instead concerned that the teacher is okay. Why? Because I'm a human being who has empathy for the suffering of others.

While I am concerned for the teacher's physical and emotional health, I'd still never pry into WHY they are out. That's their business.
-- Maybe they or their family member has the flu.
-- Maybe they or a family member has cancer.
-- Maybe they or a family member has a doctor's appointment.
-- Maybe they're having surgery.
-- Maybe they have been summoned for jury duty.
-- Maybe they're at a meeting at Gatehouse.
-- Maybe they were in an accident.
-- Maybe they needed a mental health day due to dealing with unreasonable parents.

There's a lot of Maybes, but only one Certain, which is that it is none of our business.

Perfect answer, but you forgot one:

-pulled from classes to be in IEP or 504 meetings, because they have multiple students with IEPs/504s and each one requires meetings a couple of times per year

They usually don’t stay the entire time at an IEP meeting - they go back to the class after an hour or maybe less. 504 meetings at our school are often held at 8 am so teachers are able to get to their classes and not even need coverage.

Are those 8 AM meetings held before school hours or during school hours?

Before.

Outside of contract hours?

What are contract hours?

Why are you pandering to this? Who cares if you took 5 days for yourself or your kids or whatever. EVERY JOB that’s salaried includes days off, nobody has to justify using them.

Yup....I personally don't care if they feel better. Personal/sick leave are my days and I have a family and myself to worry about.

Those are also the parents that come 20-40 minutes late for the start of the meeting because they are entitled or proving a point…who knows why. But because they were late, we can’t finish the meeting on time and it throws everyone’s schedule off, Often resulting in the need for a second meeting. It’s intentional, because it happens every time.

teachers should be allowed one day a week (Mon. through Fri.) off. they are overworked, undercompensated, always doing work on the weekends, etc.

fcps needs to compensate teachers who have leave when they exit the system.

Yes it is. Contract states there may be meetings outside of school hours. That can include team meetings. It is simply not possible to have all meetings during the time the kids are there.

DP
True. There are a few school board policies that limit things such as the number of staff meetings, their length, and address the notice that needs to be given.

Its not an occasional meeting it's constant asking of teachers to work around the clock. Kindly shut it!

It’s very possible if you staff the buildings properly.

You shut it. I’m a retired FCPS teacher and I’m just explaining what the contract says. 8 am meetings are technically ok. The contract doesn’t prohibit any meetings outside of school hours.

Feel free to work to the rule if you have an issue with it.

WJLA's coverage of our education system has been disgusting and abysmal. They should be ashamed of themselves and their shoddy journalism. The hatchet job they did on LCPS, for example, was embarrassing. Rank amateur stuff.

Within reason, this is fine.

It's not okay to schedule an IEP meeting that starts at 5pm and expect a teacher to be able to attend it.

It's not okay to schedule a meeting for two hours after school and then also expect teachers to be at school that same night for back to school night.

It's not okay to schedule an after-school meeting every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday and then also expect teachers to also stay after school two days every week to help students.

It's not okay to schedule one meeting from 3:00-4:00, another from 4:00-5:00, and another from 5:00-6:30 when the teacher has been at school since 7:00.
