ASL does not count as a “language”. Which is ridiculous. But that’s the way it is.

uhhh... it definitely counts as a foreign language at our HS (woodson)

I am the OP who said it didn’t count.

Really? I was literally told last week in my son’s IEP meeting by the counselor that, sadly, ASL does not “count” as a foreign language. (West Po). She said it was recent.

On the VDOE website for advanced diploma requirements in the list of approved classes (word doc), it explicitly says that ASL counts for world language. My phone isn’t letting me link directly to the word doc, but it’s after the second paragraph. https://www.doe.virginia.gov/parents-students/for-students/graduation/diploma-options/advanced-studies-diploma-graduation-requirements

The requirements also says that if a student has an IEP, they can get an accommodation to take computer programming instead of a world language. That doesn’t sound appropriate for OP, but might help some of you.

For the people saying kids won’t get into good colleges with ASL- you are totally wrong. But go on thinking that.

To the parent who was given wrong information in the IEP meeting- I am surprised you have gotten to 8th grade without this happening. Email the whole team and ask for clarity on ASL.
