What are you even talking about? Everyone here is discussing the post made by the OP. OP's child is an AFAB NB and not a trans girl. This isn't the politics board and we aren't discussing trans girls in sports here. You're taking someones post asking for help about a local school district for her child and talking about something very different. Do you realize how screwed up you are? And for the record, trans girls can play with cis girls in MCPS schools, not that it's at all relevant to the conversation or the post that you're trying to subvert for your bigoted beliefs. Again, this isn't the politics board. If you don't have useful input for the OP then why are you here? |
Have you not bothered to read the post and replies from the OP? She clearly said that the school doesn't have enough kids on the teams. |
Don't worry we are doing a lot of research and my husband and I are not on board yet. I have done a lot of research on the medical and psychological considerations but I couldn't find a clear answer to this question. Although my child is not a great athlete, they get a lot of joy from participating on their sports teams and the exercise is important for their physical and mental health. If they aren't going to be able to continue on their sports teams that's something they need to know about before deciding if they want to take T. Once they determine if this is something they still want then we as adults will make the final decision. |
Obviously this is child and case specific but based on what you’ve posted so far there is no way I’d let a female-bodied child who is “not a great athlete” participate on any high school boys sports team, medication or not. You are asking for a whole new set of problems. |
I think everyone's preference is for them to participate on the girls team. If MD state rules don't allow that they will stop participating in high school sports. Like I said, no decisions have been made yet. I just am trying to figure out school athletic regulations. If anyone actually knows what the rules are I'd appreciate a link. |
Is this a sport where the team doesn’t compete and play any other teams? Are the other teams all Coed? |
I appreciate your post but I'm not here to get advice on the topic of medicating them. If no one knows the answer to the specific question about high school sports eligibility, I'll ask the admin take this down or have it moved to politics. With the exception of a few posters, I'm a little dismayed that this sub forum is as unhelpful as most of the others. |
I found this through google but absolutely ask anyway. There's a few very outspoken transphobic people on this board that give their opinions as though they're facts on things like this. I doubt most of them even live in Montgomery County and they almost certainly don't have kids in sports playing against your child. What I'm saying is to ignore them. If I'm reading this correctly, trans people can play on whatever team they want. It makes no mention of hormone testing and I doubt that would matter in high school sports. https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/siteassets/district/lgbtq/mcps-athletics-lgbtq-one-pager.rtm.pdf Per MPSSAA guidance and to ensure competitive fairness, the integrity of women’s sports, and equal opportunities to participate without discrimination, transgender and gender nonconforming students in MCPS shall be permitted to participate on the interscholastic athletics team of— the student’s sex assigned at birth; or the gender to which the student has transitioned; or the student’s asserted gender identity. |
Thank you, I did find that but noted it didn't talk about hormones. I didn't know how likely it is for them to do testing but now that you say that I bet they wouldn't for a Bad New Bears level team. I don't live in MoCo but hopefully this applies to our school system as well. They have a liberal LGBTQI+ policy in general so hopefully we are good. |
There are some national athletic associations that have explicit rules about this. I'm not sure if MCPS or any other school districts have anything similar, but this may be helpful guidance.
USA Hockey's Transgender Athletic Eligibility Policy states: A transgender male (FTM athlete) may continue to play Girls Recreational Hockey or Girls Competitive Hockey so long as the athlete has not begun testosterone hormone therapy related to gender transition. A FTM athlete that has begun testosterone hormone therapy related to gender transition shall be considered a male athlete and eligible only for the hockey classifications not restricted by gender. |
Did you actually ask the relevant people at the school? Or did you just come to DCUM? I suspect yet another anti-trans troll post. |
I have not talked to anyone at the school because I am 99% sure that the athletic director won't know. She is a lovely person but not the brightest tool in the shed. I don't think we are anti-trans people but we are being cautious because 15 year olds don't have a fully formed frontal cortex. We have exclusively been using their preferred name and pronouns and advocated for their rights at school. They have been going to therapy for over a year with a LCSW who specializes in gender identity. There are reasons that we don't allow kids to make major life decisions at 15. If I had been given free reign I would have dated a guy 4 years older than me and likely gotten married at 18. There are consequences to taking hormones and I don't think it is unreasonable to ask questions. There are also consequences to not supporting taking hormones. I just want to go into this with as much information as possible. I was hoping that this subgroup would be helpful since I was under the impression that an LGBTQIA+ group might have experience navigating this issue but it seems like it is a lot like the rest of DCUM. I don't think it is anti-trans to be cautious before we make a major medical decision. |
And doping is not allowed in sports. It's not hard. |
What about ADHD meds? Do you consider those doping? Amphetamines are on a list of banned substances but lots of kids are on those and play sports. Question comes up, if testosterone is considered medically necessary, does that disqualify them from competing in a gendered sport? |
My question is WHY can a trans child play on whatever team they want?
I know a kid who was a very fast runner as a boy. He transitioned. She has the same body. If she were to compete on the girls' team, she'd be dramatically faster than anyone else in our league. (They are not competing, which is sad in its own way.) |
