Zero chance I am perusing that 30 something page thread. To each their own but after that horrifying story about a dad being a creeper and the kid having to call people in the middle of the night for help, I am not sending my kid to someone’s home where the parents insist on taking their phone from them. You can call me an idiot if that makes you feel better somehow, but I’m comfortable with my choice. |
Read this story. https://people.com/oregon-dad-accused-drugging-girls-12-year-old-daughters-sleepover-8602981 |
| I have a friend whose daughter had a stomach ache at a slumber party. She told the parent a few times who gave her gingerale, blew it off as too many sweets, etc. She felt embarrassed to tell the mother again when the stomach ache got worse. texted her mom at midnight and came to get her. It was appendicitis. If my kid wants to contact me, they should have the means to do so. I dont care what we did 30 years ago, we live in a different time now. |
+1 These parents can't teach their kids responsible phone usage but come down on parents who are ok with their kids texting them goodnight/if they need them? So bizarre and backwards! |
The chances of this happening at very rare. If you are afraid of this happening, you shouldn’t send your kid on a sleepover, cell phone or not. This isn’t a valid reason for kids to have all night access to cell phones and sleepovers and if at my house, they won’t. But I’m upfront about that so parents can make the best choice for their child before sending. |
Yup lol. Friend groups usually have a set they have access to just for this situation. Makes me wonder how many posters here would agree to give up their phone at a party / event
|
This is wild. A kid can’t go tell the other mom her stomach still hurts and have to text mom instead, you then probably texts the other mom. This makes just never want to host sleepovers. Kids have zero ability to deal away from their parents. Which is why they feel they must have their phone always |
And that is your choice, but for me I’m not willing to risk that my child is the rare person this happens to and she has no way to contact someone for help. At least you inform parents of your rule up front so they can take that into account when deciding if their kid can spend the night at your house. |
The kid already told the adult multiple times that their stomach hurt and was blown off, and you’re shocked they wouldn’t want to go back to that same adult again complaining of the stomach pain? GTFO with that nonsense. |
She could have told her mom in the early evening her stomach hurt. She could have woke the other mom up at midnight at said she is a lot of pain and wants to go homes. Do you really think the other mom would have said too bad? Kids should be capable of advocating for themselves without a phone. Any normal adult would contact a parent in the night of a kid is in writhing pain and wakes them up and asks for a parent. Or even if they just say, can I call my mom. This isn’t hard |
Sorry your kid can’t manage to use their phone appropriately and your only choice is to hide it from them. |
| My kids phones turn into bricks at a designated time each night. Phone calls still work though. |
This isnt about any one individual or what you do at your own house. Surely you understand having a bunch of 12 yr olds with cell phones all night can be problematic for many reasons. Sorry you child cannot cope or problem solve without texting you |
Of course you are /s |
Yeah, that Oregon 12 year old really should have had to problem solve and cope with the adult male drugging her and being a perv in the middle of the night without the use of a phone. Missed a chance to build character or something
