Anyone considering UVA Year in Wise VA transfer program?

Anonymous
I know someone who is on faculty at UVA Wise. We visit once or twice a year. It's a beautiful area, but it is isolated, and it's difficult and far to get to anything resembling urban/suburban. Simply not a lot of options. Wal Mart is the grocery store. Do you want to drive an hour for Trader Joes (or name your store of choice)? At least with shipping you have access to things.

I wish the state would really invest in UVA-Wise. If they could build the student population up - double or triple - maybe it could attract more to that economically depressed area.

That said, it is a beautiful area of the country. If your child likes outdoors/mountains, they may like it. I think kids form tight groups there. It's a cute small town atmosphere with festivals and other small town events.

This seems like a better option than people are making it sound. One year w other uva transfers and dunno which other southern school you are talking about but unless it’s St. Unc, uva is much better

For those families who are visiting Wise soon please report back. Am very interested to hear about views from your DD DS after the visit. And, to PP thanks very much for the FB recommendation! I did not know this existed prior.

One school wants your kid to attend. So much so that they are giving them a free ride to go there.

UVA didn’t think enough of your kid to admit them. But they know in a test optional GPA inflated world they are going to make some admission mistakes and have kids flunk out after the first year. So they have a bunch of ready made full pay sophomores waiting in the wings to keep their budget balanced.

This is wisdom, OP. Congrats on the full ride scholarship for your kid, that is amazing!

This. The academics at UVA are not going to be much different than most T100 schools. This is the obvious answer.

Take the full ride! I can’t imagine socially trying to start somewhere as a sophomore when everyone else already has friends. If your child doesn’t like the southern school, transferring elsewhere is always an option. I wouldn’t want to be stuck in Wise as an 18 year old.

It wouldn't be so bad if they just want to concentrate on academics at Wise.

Choice is down to: UVA - in state, full pay (UVA) via transfer from UVA Wise, or a 100% full scholarship, Honors program, to an OOS large school in south, which they really like but academics at UVA are of course much better.
Go for the scholarship unless you're rich.

Which’s school?

100% take the full scholarship and do honors college in the south. No brainer.

Any feedback from those who visited UVA Wise recently?

Make up your mind, starting somewhere as a sophomore = no good. Then you recommend a transfer after a freshmen year.
Year in Wise kids have their own cohort (85 kids this year) who bond and move to Charlottesville together.

Your child can survive a year without Trader Joe’s.

100% full scholarship, Honors program, to an OOS large school in south, which they really like

Obviously this. Don't make this about you wanting a child at UVA.

Almost in West Virginia, not Tennessee. Regardless, it can be a very good option if the student focuses on maintaining the required transfer GPA.

Op, you shouldn’t be asking current twelfth graders this question.

You should be trying to visit or talk to kids who are at Wise AND kids who are at UVA who transferred from Wise.

And your kid needs to visit Wise.

That’s how you figure this out.
