LOL a mediocre state school with 70% acceptance rate is supposedly "far superior school for humanities" LMFAO

But hockey is great!

UMass has the consortium with the other Five Colleges, which is definitely nice. VA tech is closer though

So I have a child at UMass and he is very happy there. He is in STEM and really enjoys it and feels like he is getting a top-notch education. I cannot speak to humanities/psychology disciplines, but some of his electives in those areas have been fun.

VT is much closer than, so definitely factor that in. My son took the train home (8 hours) or flew home from Hartford airport. There are many transportation options to the various airports.

My son chose UMass because he wanted to get away from VA, and it’s been the right decision for him. There are party dorms and not-so-party dorms (mine chose the quieter dorms). The food is fantastic, as is the rec center. You get used to the cold. My son has made friends and seems very happy.

We pay about $40k after merit.

A lot of students do use it, though I don't have numbers. It also means there are a lot more cultural and social events.

Per the most recent published CDS data, the acceptance rates are effectively identical at ~ 58%.

It’s a shame: this board used to be a place where reason could prevail. Instead we have posters saying the third best state school in Virginia — a tech school at that — is better than the state flagship of the most educated state in the country for, get this, social sciences and humanities. All I can say is have fun in Blacksburg. Not like Amherst is a better town…

UMass isn't even better than UConn. Do your research people.

University of Nebraska or Montana is also state flagship.

Really? I always thought the worse the football the better the school's academics.

Linguistics — UMass is #3 in the entire world. https://www.topuniversities.com/university-subject-rankings/linguistics

Philosophy — #36 in the world, Virginia Tech unranked. https://www.philosophicalgourmet.com/overall-rankings/

Psychology — UMass tied for 29th. Virginia Tech unranked. https://www.socialpsychology.org/ranking.htm

I could go on and on, but why bother?

Why would anyone go to UMass instead of VT? VT is an amazing school and UMass kind of sucks.

Tell us you have never been to Amherst without telling us you have never been to Amherst.

Exactly. Consortium is a just marketing pitch, and not used by most students.
