You cannot magically not hit DNA, mitochondria, ribosomes, and remove electrons because then the X-Ray wouldn't work. They are not harmless; they are high energy particles that change the nature of the matter in your body. On average, it's not going to be the thing that kills you, but it probably makes sense to not subject your head to ionizing radiation more often than necessary.

Dentist want to take as many xrays as they can it's all about the money. It costs them nothing yet they make money on em'.

An exam/consultation costs them nothing yet they make money on those too. I don’t see your point.

Complete BS. Insurance companies pay for 4 bitewings and 2 periapical xrays annually and a panoromic every 3-5 years...the dentist writes off/does not charge for the extra ones so the notion that its done for money is completely false, its done to double check everything and what do you say when its missed??? its the dentists fault?? check your fact please

Girl, same. One day, I’m going to sneak it into my bag and take it home with me.

(I kid, I already have a weighted blanket, which I love more than both of my dogs and at least one of my children)

I think these would be great for anxious flyers - like me!

Man, it never occurred to me to decline them - which is a shame because I have a (fairly common!) bone growth on the top of my mouth and they are frequently so painful that I cry. I’ve never had a technician be nice about it, they all think I’m being a baby, but it hurts so much.

Maybe I’ll start declining them because I’m “afraid of the space rays!”

Radiation is everywhere.

What am i going to say? I'm not going to say anything. If they bring it and drape it over me, fine. If they don't, fine.

Name your dentist please, none of mine have ever written off anything. As if.

A few years ago, when I was poised to get a set of X-rays for a crown, I asked my dentist if I should be worried that it was too much radiation. She said that with digital X-rays the radiation was much less of a concern, and that they continued to use the lead aprons only because it made people feel safe. She also said I was showing my age; none of her younger patients ever ask about radiation. 😀

But what’s the downside of using them….

Dentists have even confirmed this. I open it up that if they have seen something and they want an x-ray look, we're happy to do it. They always say it's okay. We do give in every three years or so. Never any new information. Kids are also going to an orthodontist anyway. Think about it.

Same.

They are also expensive, a money maker for dentists and often unnecessary. I never have cavities. When they push the xrays i always say "I thought we just did that x months ago" and invariably they had. Always ask.

And you don't know how old their machine is. I do ask for an apron

Those docs just don’t want to deal with you, they just say okay to move things along. Duh!

+1, they are not going to argue. They write in your chart "declined medical advice" and move on.
I like seeing my xrays.

Per all the additional PPs, you're a sucker. But you do you.

Just want to point out the frequency of x-rays is patient dependent. Never had a cavity? Every 3 years (or more!) is fine. Have a mouth full of dental work? Every year is needed, maybe even every 6 months if you have a new cavity every time you go in. You can’t make blanket statements about the frequency of x-rays for everyone.

Np here. Yes! I’m in my 40s and have some old dental work. The X-rays are important because if there is decay deep under some of the dental work, I may not realize until it gets infected or gets close to the nerve.

There is always a cost-benefit assessment, and it’s highly individual.

X-rays are limited and can't show decay under a crown.

DCUM cracks me up. All you people will boast about all your international travels but then be scared about X-rays. A surgeon told me last week that a cross country airplane ride exposes the human body to the same amount of radiation as a CT scan. Pilots and flight attendants have the highest exposure rates to radiation…

ITA! I had a complicated root canal a while back and even though I don't mind getting dental work done, it was a lot. Midway thru, they put the apron on me to take an x-ray. It felt so great! I asked them if I could just keep it on, and they said sure. It made a huge difference in my comfort level--i was much more relaxed.
