The Wilson pool is still closed: what a travesty, and it’s Muriel Bowser’s fault.

Sorry, you have no clue what you’re talking about. Last year (before MacArthur opened), there were 1427 students going to Jackson-Reed who were inside the boundaries:

https://profiles.dcps.dc.gov/Jackson-Reed+High+School

That’s well below the maximum capacity for Jackson-Reed. You seem to have this bizarre idea that OOB students are in-bound students who are in Ward 4. That's…not what OOB means. OOB is outside of the boundary for the school (this should be obvious, but apparently it needs to be explained to some people).

Jackson-Reed had enough space for all in-boundary students and many OOB students, just not as many OOB students as the city wanted to send. No boundaries had to be drawn, because the OOB students are all coming from outside of the current boundaries (again, it’s shocking that this needs to be explained, but apparently it does).

What I don't understand is why they opened the Wilson pool during the summer when there are so many outdoor pools to use in the summer, and then closed it in fall/winter when everyone needs indoor pools. That must be one of the dumbest policy decisions I've ever heard of.

That’s an innovative pillar of Mayor Bowser’s ambitious climate change policy goals!

No, I'm responding to you repeatedly whining about the suffering of in-bounds Ward 3 students. The in-bounds students are not all Ward 3. Ward 3 is not a synonym for in-bounds in this conversation. You are the one conflating Ward boundaries and "in-bounds" to J-R boundaries, not me. Now you want to backtrack and say you were only mad about OOB kids, but somehow you only had sympathy for the "suffering" of the in-bounds Ward 3 students, so I guess IB Ward 4 kids just . . . don't exist in your mind.

Anyway, you are still doing a lot of whining about how hard Ward 3 has it based on . . . having a coveted high school, then getting a new high school, and not getting your pool fixed *faster* than all the other Wards' pools get fixed. Again: boo hoo.

So, when is the pool supposed to open? When they get a crane?

I've lived in DC since 1993. DC should not get statehood and needs federal oversight.

I could care less about who is in-bounds and who is not. I want a functioning public school system for all wards. As a Ward 3 resident, it does irk me that it took us forever to get an indoor and an outdoor pool in our ward. But, what really upsets me is how this is a mirror for all the dysfunction that occurs in our city government. Why is the Wilson pool closed? Because three city agencies have to work together to do so and they can't agree, communicate or do their own individual part. Why are so many things broken in our city? But, plenty of speed bumps & traffic cameras!

And given that Jackson-Reed draws students from all across the city - 43% is Ward 3 - it's not even majority Ward 3.

Ward 4 resident here. In the winter, I go to both the Wilson pool and the Takoma pool with my kids. My kids like Wilson a little better, so I'm bummed it's still closed. But Ward 3 residents can easily go to the Takoma pool while Wilson is still closed, just as we went to Wilson when Takoma was closed (for longer than expected). Not a huge deal.

DC should create a fourth agency to coordinate the three agencies. Think of all the jobs that this would create.

Crime has gotten really bad around Takoma pool.

I love it when someone completely ignores the conversation and yells at people. Here's the initial comment:

The response:

Anonymous wrote:As to the bolded, you guys literally *just* got an additional high school to avoid anyone being redistricted out of the only coveted by-right high school in the District.

I mean, if you want to I guess we can be pedantic and say that Ward 3 didn't get an additional school - it never had and still doesn't have any high school. Jackson-Reed's boundary included areas from half of the city's wards, and now MacArthur and Jackson-Reed have boundaries that include multiple wards.

But it's crazy to say "You guys in Ward 3 have two high schools now!" and then when someone responds to that, say, "How dare you say that these two high schools are Ward 3 high schools!"

DC always goes with the lowest cheapest bidder, if it’s a minority owned business they get a lot of preference. Even if they have no experience this is why once things are built they start to fall apart quickly. Takoma pool seems to be shut every two years for months for “maintenance” I can’t think of any other jurisdiction that is as bad as DC in maintaining infrastructure.

I never thought I would say this, but I miss Adrian Fenty and Michelle Rhee.

That's the DC statehood dream. A new state-level bureaucracy to oversee the municipal bureaucracy. More jobs for the Community!

You missed a level. You will regional departments to mediate between the state and municipalities by area.
