Kids at MLS Professional Club Academies like Philly Union, LA Galaxy, NY Red Bulls etc missing a couple days school (with tutoring to makeup) where it's free and no travel expenses makes sense.
If you're on pay-to-play team and have to miss school, foot travel expenses and take time off from work and other hassles, a bit too much. |
2 DD’s. One received and one will receive free college education thanks to showcases they missed school for. |
Full College Scholarships on the Boys Side for Soccer are rare and limited. |
Extremely rare. It’s so different for boys and girls. There can be zero comparison. It’s extremely extremely hard to even get a spot that you have to pay for. It’s been said time and time again- girls are t competing with big level Football and Basketball the schools’ main $ makers, nor do they have the degree of international players and older rosters/transfers. |
I said "one year". My then u10 is now older and yes in December he is missing 3 days for an out of state tournament. I’m with you. |
Yeah- this year girls team same age group had 12 signings from top schools; boys 1 signing low academic school |
| 12 signings does not equal full scholarships on the girls side |
Oh- I know. But, at least they had signings. That was my point--even if the boys are willing to full pay, there are almost no spots/no signings. |
This doesn't make sense. Not all kids on academy make it to the pros. My kid misses school for soccer, but does the work. This is kind of like saying everyone should be in the office because no one can telework. My kid is great at making sure to keep up grades at school. Not a big deal. |
Not all kids at Any Academy in the World make it to Pros. Not even Man City or Real Madrid Academy. However, the odds are Highest and Most Likely in the favor of kids at a Professional Club Academy to become a professional player than kids who are not. Feel free to pull-up the roster of any Division 1 professional team in Europe or England and look at "Youth Career" of players. |
| If playing in college isn't the end game, can kids skip showcases or show up only for the games that don't conflict with school? Anyone have experience with that and how was it received by coach (and player)? |
Professors care about attendance? I understand not missing tests and assignments, but if the student is getting their work done and passing their exams, why would a professor care if they miss a random class every now and then? |
So does ours. Especially college showcases. Band trips get excused why not athletic trips that help with college progress? |
It’s not about the money for the boys (there is barely any). But it can get you into a college you might otherwise not have gotten into (gives you an edge similar to other extra curriculars). If you are good enough it pushes you over the line assuming you meet a minimum standard for the school. If the goal is college support, showcases aren’t any different than debate tournaments that kids miss school for. |
My kids stuck with getting the grades and scores- so they had the stats to apply anywhere. This also pushes you above the line of other players of sane skill. Hey coach- I have straight As and a 36 ACT. |
