Dear Student and Parent/Guardian,

Congratulations! We are excited to share that you are eligible for direct admissions to George Mason University for the fall 2024 semester! This opportunity is available through an innovative partnership with Fairfax County Public Schools.

You may have heard of direct admissions programs in the news lately. Direct admissions programs match students with a college based on their strong academic performance in high school. Your academic record makes you a great fit for George Mason University to continue your education.

George Mason University is the largest research university in Virginia, with over 40,000 students. Since its founding in 1972, Mason has embraced diversity and inclusion as one of its core principles. Mason proudly accepts nearly 90% of undergraduate applicants because they believe in inclusivity over exclusivity. Their graduation rate exceeds the national average, and there are no disparities in academic success rates among the differing ethnic groups or socioeconomic statuses of students.

Students selected for direct admissions at Mason benefit from a streamlined admissions process and application. This includes a waived application fee, and students do not need to submit an essay or letters of recommendation.

To accept your offer and connect with George Mason University directly, your parent/guardian will need to provide consent to share your information with the Admissions Office. The following Action Steps must be completed by the Parent/Guardian by Wednesday, September 27, 2023.

Parent/Guardian must complete and sign the attached consent form and return to ..., Director of Student Services, by Wednesday, September 27, 2023. If the paper consent form is not received, your student will not be eligible GMU Direct Admissions-Consent Form-English-Spanish-9-19-23.pdf

Student must complete the Google Form to submit the student's PERSONAL email address (students may not submit their @fcpsschools.net)

Once both items have been received, the STUDENT will receive a communication from George Mason University to the personal email address provided. This email will provide the link to the specific application that must be completed in order to be considered for the program. If the student has already applied directly to George Mason University or by the Common Application, the student MUST complete the separate application within the timeline.

To learn more about Mason and your non-binding direct admissions offer, please visit Mason’s website.

Wow! Mind sharing what the stats were for your DC? My high stats DS at FCPS did not get this.

So a wealthy high school?

I’m guessing they are piloting it at HSs with lower rates of college applications.

This isn’t based on stats. If it’s part of EIP, it’s about first-gen. That PP who claimed FCPS students have access to a direct admission based on GPA like ACPS is wrong.

+1. It’s designed to target underrepresented students

Yes, not URM and not 1st Gen. I’m not going to name the high school but it is one of the high schools that feeds from Title I elementary and middle schools and is a majority-minority school with a majority FARMS students.

You mean Alexandria schools? No, it's a partnership between certain schools in neighboring counties and GMU.

Is there a similar partnership between GMU or JMU and high-FARMs high schools in Appalachia?

The programs are designed to deal with the problem of declining applications and to target underrepresented students - hence, offered in Alexandria City.

That doesn't make it right. If you're URM, you don't have to do anything accept click a link accepting your offer? If you're not, be prepared to submit an app, pay the fees, write the essays and submit recs?

Would you like to trade lives with URMs so you don't have to write 2 essays?

Of course not. However, my friends and I were low to middle class and received no help with apps. In fact, some were first generation but had to fill out apps just like everyone else. They weren't automatically admitted.

And your point? GMU is allowing ALL Alexandria City students with 3.25 to do this. White, black, Asian, Hispanic. It also apparently partnered with a first gen program that allows ALL first gen students to do this. So either move to Alexandria, be first gen, or write your essays.
