Colleges for a strong dancer and student

I can second this based on personal experience. I was a dancer at Emory and it was a great experience. And it's a great school. So. Go for it.

Didn’t see she’s applying TO. Substantial merit aid will be hard to get if you’re not submitting test scores.

I don’t think that’s true everywhere. A friend’s daughter got $30k/year in merit aid from Middlebury TO.

Middlebury doesn’t really give merit aid. I checked the CDS and it was something like 32K in non-need aid and 70 million in need based aid.

Her reduced tuition is $50K and her parents make $250K/year with no other kids.

Was she a 2023 HS graduate? DP but as far I know Middlebury doesn’t give merit aid unless they changed this year.

I was going to add Muhlenberg, but I see it mentioned a few times already.
Also, some recs (Vassar, Barnard, Princeton, Middlebury) don't offer merit. If need based aid is an option, a strong dance portfolio might help at Vassar.
St. Mary's of md says they are adding a performing arts major, but there is not much detail on when and what.
American and Catholic are strong for theatre, perhaps dance as well?

VCU has a dance program.

Interesting about St Mary’s - that is worth looking into.

American has a bachelor’s in dance, so also worth investigating

VCU and GMU are BFA only. There are rumors that VCU might add a bachelors, but don’t count on it soon. VCU is also urban.

I haven’t heard anything about dance at Catholic-they certainly haven’t appeared on any lists I have scoured for the past year and a half

Anonymous wrote:DD is a talented dancer and strong student from MCPS. She spends 15-20 hours a week dancing in a pre-pro conservatory and has a 4.5 WGPA (3.9 GPA) with 7-8 APs. She’s a terrible test taker and won’t be submitting scores. She’d love to dance all day but knows she’ll need to support herself and wants to make a difference in the world. Whether she can do that through her art is uncertain.

For now, she hopes to double major in dance and biology, environmental science, or public policy and wants to go into conservation work someday. She’d like to stay in the mid-Atlantic and would need significant merit aid to go out of state. Any recommendations?

Bucknell has a strong dance program if she could get in there and afford it.

Bucknell. Wake Forest. Dickinson for sure. Tulane. I’ve heard Skidmore. is she willing to go to a women’s college. Many of them have ballet.

“My kid wants to stay in the kid-Atlantic”

“Have you considered Texas?”

Seriously, people

Bucknell and Wake Forest are dance minor only and also not well known for merit aid

I applied to both 30 years ago and wake was actually cheaper than Bucknell then. Bucknell gave me a “scholarship” of $500/year. Yeah, no.

I agree that Shenandoah is worth considering. Very strong dance program and non-BFA students can still minor and take conservatory classes.
