No, the IB program at Eastern is really in name only. It’s not real IB or rigorous. The only 2 schools that really do IB correctly and have decent IB scores in this town are DCI and WIS. |
Are they authorized by IB? They have to go through a review process every few years to maintain their IB status. |
Both Eastern (https://easternhighschooldcps.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=457251&type=d ND Ahttps://www.ibo.org/school/049200/) and Banneker (https://www.ibo.org/en/school/001318) are authorized by IB. It is my impression that at Banneker more students go the AP route, which may make the info/input on the IB progrram harder to find. At Eastern, the number of students getting the full IB diploma has increased in recent years and had been quite small in the past. |
| Why is Jackson Reed only 55% in-boundary? Are the out of boundary students coming in because they lotteried into a feeder school? Or are they lotterying in to JR for high school? Wondering because JR is over subscribed. |
They are IB because they offer the courses and diploma. That’s it. Not high bar to be named an IB program Look at percentage of kids who get the actual diploma AND the average score for the school. That will tell you how legit it is It is not good for either schools above. BTW the IB courses they both offered from link above is also very limited. |
Yes it is the feeder school OOB kids continuing on. They should get rid of it and the school would not be oversubscribed. |
Wasn't MacArthur supposed to provide relief to JR? |
Not saying what you wrote is true vs. not true, but I also would assume you haven't sat in on or had a child in the classes in either of those programs? Also I have not seen anywhere online where you can see scores for specific schools - I have seen that you need to email the counselor at the school to find out scores. Is there another place you have found scores that you could share? That would be interesting, although I also would like to know more about the tests - I know we go back and forth on here a lot about PARCC/CAPE scores and what they do or don't mean. I know for Eastern and I assume for Banneker there are prerequisites and grades required to be in the IB full diploma program, and many students choose to pursue another program within the school. Not sure about Banneker, but I know at Eastern that while the number is still small, it has been growing, especially since interest/enrollment in the EPIC program for 9th/10th graders has been increasing. |
“Because of our focus on equity and inclusiveness, we do not require a specific GPA for admittance into IB” Above is word for word from the Eastern link. But equity…….. |
It will, but it will take time. This is the first year Hardy students didn't have the option to attend JR. Deal was 85% IB last year while Hardy was 61%, so I suspect JR will have a higher IB % as time goes on. Some interesting trends: Deal's IB % has been steadily climbing, from 74% in SY19-20 to 85% in SY24-25. Hardy's IB % climbed rapidly and then more slowly from 46% in SY19-20 to 65% in SY23-24, then dropped a bit to 61% in SY24-25. JR's IB % has bounced around between 61-67% from SY19-20 through SY24-25. 61% in SY24-25. |
For me, the size of the Eastern program is what makes it less attractive. I'd want to see a cohort of at least 30 students (in the grade, not in the program) because otherwise I'd worry about the ability to fill out IB classes and attract teachers who are capable of and want to teach them. When I've looked into the Eastern program in the last few years, it was more like 12-15 students pursuing the IB degree, maybe a few more taking some of the classes. That's not big enough IMO. |

The best and most up-to-date source for this data is here: https://edscape.dc.gov/page/enrollments-dcps-boundary-00
Download the spreadsheet at the bottom of the page to easily see all the metrics. |
OK.. not sure if you are the same poster from above, that is a different topic than knowing the numbers and scores. Which can be discussed separately, but being more flexible with entry is not necessarily a bad thing - kids have bad years for various reasons that can impact grades. If they were letting kids stay in the program without meeting certain criteria, that is a different situation, and not sure if anybody on this thread is actually familiar with the program to answer. |
Where did you get those numbers from? |
| I'm excited to see how the the new Eastern principal, coming from Banneker with IB experience, will enhance the IB program at Eastern. My older child (now at an application HS) get lots of messaging during our IB MS time about programs at Eastern and as an 8th grader, info about applying to the EPIC program. I also have a 6th grader and am keeping an eye on how the IB program grows at Eastern in the next few years. |
