Why the heck is there no school on June 4?

My kids are! (But I predict they eliminate it if there are no snow days.)

The snow days are June 20th and 21st!
If you really want to address academics - put more teaching days when kids are in a position to learn.

1 - Remove the Wed before Thanksgiving as a holiday. When you have a 2 day week nothing happens Mon or Tues. Making it a 3 day week is a statement that instruction will happen that week.
2 - Have school go until Dec 22nd. Having a full week of instruction before winter break will support the kids who most need it.
3 - Move the October PD day from the 20th to the 31st. This way you do not need to waste a day of the students doing Halloween parties. Kids can do that at home.
4- get rid of the ides of March holiday - and provide instruction 4 days that week.

DCPS used to be open the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Attendance was abysmal for both students and teachers. There was zero instruction that day.

Having a PD day on October 31 just means the Halloween celebrations will
occur on the 30th. It’s not going to add a day of instruction

Especially since it results in the last day of school being a Monday. Wtf. So we have a random day off in the middle of the week in the last month of school, but then school ends on a Monday.

I do not usually complain about DCPS schedules but this one is really stupid.

Ending on a Monday kills me. Like seriously who thought that was a good idea?

This!

LOL. That PP is determined to make kids and teachers miserable. She must have been taught by nuns in a drafty school with no heat.

Teachers will be there. Honestly ending on a Monday feels like a serious FU to them from Downtown.

Yup, kind of like all those years we started pre-service week on a Friday. Principals NEVER did anything on that day, and the maintenance on the buildings was never done, so lots of teachers couldn't even start work on their classrooms, but we had to be there. Wasting the day because central office said so.

The city council passed a law mandating school closure on Election Day. Another cute idea that is a mess as a practical matter

How is that a mess? It's a very normal procedure all around the country, since schools are used as voting centers.

Why does it everyone forget that when they said they were getting rid of Feb break they said they would make more 4 day weekends throughout the year. That’s what March 15 is.

Yup, it's Yom Kippur, which traditionally falls in early June, you nailed it
