I cannot believe this was almost 10 years ago. It's so seared into my brain I would have guessed maybe 5 years ago. So tragic and preventable. |
| I saw 2 he f ty whales of women in Virginia who were talking about where to eat next with their car door fully open and them standing next to their car as other cars passed by. They saw a student trying to maneuver between them and their fat azzss move still. |

That cyclist is a moron if they hit that car door.
|
Not only your drivers side door. Your doors on both side. If you open your door on the curb/sidewalk side and it hits a pedestrian on the sidewalk, you are at fault. |
Exactly! I have always arranged my kids’ car seats so that I can buckle them from the passenger side. I also teach my kids to always get it and out of the car on the passenger side and scoot over if needed. I thought that was common sense. |
+1 Cyclists somehow manage to be the biggest a$$holes on the street, with no awareness, common sense, or consideration for others, while at the same time whining incessantly about how they’re treated. Get the F out of the way. |

I assume you mean this:
§ 46.2-818.1. Opening and closing motor vehicle doors; penalty. No operator shall open the door of a parked motor vehicle on the side adjacent to moving vehicular traffic unless it is reasonably safe to do so. A violation of this section shall constitute a traffic infraction punishable by a fine of not more than $50. No demerit points shall be awarded by the Commissioner for a violation of this section. The provisions of this section shall not apply to any law-enforcement officer, firefighter, or emergency medical services personnel engaged in the performance of his duties. |
I’ve got 50 bucks. Wannabe Lance Armstrong beware. |
The OP seems to think this code section prevents loitering with an open door. I see no time limit. Only a requirement to yield existing traffic when opening the door. After that, the traffic should yield to the newly minted pedestrian. You don't exist in some indeterminate free-for-all state after exiting the vehicle and arriving on the sidewalk. |

Yes I knew it was illegal. People do it without thinking though, there’s no malicious intent.
It shouldn’t take a lot of focus to know shouldn’t stick out into the road. |
