My PVYO kid (Philharmonia) has really enjoyed it. Especially the spring concert at the Strathmore—amazing experience to be able to play in a real concert hall (vs. high school theaters and smaller venues).

No experience with the wind ensemble, though. PVYO in general seems well-organized and communicative, no complaints there.

Thank you!

PVYO is a spin-off of MCYO. Some staff left MCYO and started their own group. Most apply for both and choose between where they get in, MCYO for prestige or location and times. Both are very good.

How hard is it to get into the MCYO orchestras? The audition looks daunting....

The co$t of participating is also daunting, or at least it used to be.

It depends on the instrument and openings. It looks a lot worse than it actually is but get someone to prep them. Email MCYO and they will help you out and talk you though it. They are fantastic. I never though my kid would get in and they did.

There are only limited spots but prep well and hope for the best. It’s worth trying for. And, worth doing

Our kid did MCYO, and also skipped a year of orchestra in HS. Now plays in college orchestra but not a music major.

It sounds like PVYO is less competitive than MCYO -- is that right?

Generally speaking, yes. Lots of MCYO kids go on to conservatory.
