You need to stick with the varietals that grow well in the area. The Cabernet Franc and Viognier are terrific but the merlot is awful. |
This is key. You can't just expect the common varietals in California to do well in this climate/region. A lot of central Virginia wineries also do a great Petit Verdot. |

To siderail a bit, when I'm down in Charlottesville I usually visit Blue Mountain Brewery as well. I need a break from wine and beer with a nice view isn't bad. |
