I had friends years ago who named their 1st child a very uncommon Italian first name and they are neither Italian nor Italian American anywhere in their combined heritages. Could they name their child such a name? Sure. Was it weird? Yup, sure was to me and the vast majority of their family and friends. They chose the name specifically for its religious meaning and were thrilled with it. My opinion is immaterial in that situation. It is their kid and their decision.

My daughter has a Greek name. No has any Greek heritage. Who cares?! If they like the name, let them do it. It is really hard to find names anyway!

I have a very italian first name and an English (the country) last name. I understand that my mother has a choice on the first name, but given that the last name was foisted on an ancestor my his then slave-owners I am stuck with the name (my husband's name has the same story). Given that background, the idea that your name has to somehow match your ethnic origins seem foreign to me. When I am looking at names (currently putting together a list for #2) all that I think about is how is sounds, what it means, whether it will be easy to spell (not subject to spelling errors), and how it works with DH's last name.

Op, its none of your business what your cousin names her child!

Look at it as the first step to a more harmonious society, where the ethnicity of names is unimportant and one cannot tell one's race simply by his name. The day when race does not differentiate us.

Also, look at the transition of boys names to girls names. Sidney (Sydney) for example. When is the last time you met a boy named Sidney?

While I know that it would be perfectly okay to name our son Finnegan (Finn for short!), I am sure people would look at him when he is older and be like, "huh? Finnegan Lopez-WTF? Then he would have to explain, No, I'm not Irish, (just one look would confirm that!), blah blah blah.

So, I don't think OP is automatically being rascist and people cannot seriously believe that there are some names that are so associated with a race/nationality that a person outside that race/nationality so named would at least cause some puzzlement.

I think that is all the OP was trying to get across.

This is hysterical. We have a very Irish last name. I wanted to name a girl Margarita. My FIL looked at me and said - Spanish?

The ethnicity of this name is the least of its problems!
