Is wearing Redskins Memorabilia derogatory or socially acceptable?

I am a big Cleveland baseball fan and pretty much relegated all of my former gear that had anything other than the C on it to wearing around the house/pool, etc. I was so glad when they changed their name and immediately bough three new shirts and wear them proudly now. Just start over.

My thought on this has always been - I don't get to tell other people what that marginalization feels like. If someone tells you that it's hurtful, why wouldn't you want to change your behavior? It's so easy. There may come a time when you want to ask someone to not do something hurtful to you - don't you want them to listen?

This is just 100% false. My Native American family cares very much.

OK, well that's you. And I'm sorry you choose to find offense with this. According to the Post's national survery on this issue several years ago, the vast majority of Native Americans find no offense at all. So you hardly speak for everyone.

It doesn't work that way. Only the woke get to decide what is offensive.

My H is indigenous and we have several friends who are Native American. I mentioned that team one day, and while people were polite to me, H pulled me aside afterwards and let me know I shouldn't use that word anymore. I asked a couple friends and they all verified that yea, it's generally not a good idea. It's easy for me to not say it or display bumper stickers or whatever, so I'm happy to do that to make other people comfortable.

In your case, I would keep the memorabilia since it has sentimental value for you, but I would not display it. Store it in a box, and remove the bumper stickers/license plate.

What if the person wearing it is African-American ?

If worn by an AA person, it is not racist. But it could still be prejudice.

I just don't understand this narrative that AA people can't be racist.

The logo (and its offensive nature) had nothing to do with AA people.

sorry; should have been more clear:

Redskins clothing is racist when worn by whites. Redskins clothing is not racist when worn by AA people, or other BIPOC.

“Seminole” isn’t a slur, and FSU (along with several other colleges like Illinois and Utah) work with the tribes to make sure all branding and representation is respectful.

I doubt most American Indians care, with the exception of individuals who want to stir the pot.

It is so tedious to have to explain the difference between racism and bigotry over and over again. That someone is non-white does not make it okay for them to say/do things to encourage and reinforce the marginalization of other non-white groups.

I packed all of my lovely redskins hoodies and sent it to be distributed in my home country to poor people.

+ 1.

Seminoles, etc, is like calling a team the Irish or the Highlanders. Redskins? Just no. Unless your goal is to advertise your racism.

They view all minorities as victims. They think they know what minorities want, but they have no idea.
