HS Partner/Group Math Tests - What is the Purpose?

Anonymous
I've seen really good group math problems - the kind that you can debate for a whole period about how to solve - so I don't think it's fair to say all group math tests are bad

Thank goodness your math AP and SAT exams are individually scored and (yes, even without prepping) should help to shake out the high performers from the low/mid ones.

Math is taught differently now than it was 10 years ago. It’s a global trend to be more collaborative and less rote skill and drill.

Yes, but this stuff is also just a sham to raise the overall class grades by getting a few kids to do the work.

Yeah, but more and more colleges are choosing to go SAT optional in the name of Equity.

No mostly because the SAT doesn't provide any useful information. It serves mainly as a barrier with little real value these days.

My kid had one of these a few weeks ago. They complained that the kids in their teacher assigned group didn't understand the material, and they had to spend most of the period explaining things. They ended up getting a 96% since they couldn't complete the last problem in time after having spent so much time explaining things. This lowered their overall grade to 99.6% from 100% but it helped the others.

Well, it isn't because of equity but more that it isn't all that helpful.
