DD went minimal and purchased a bit at stores nearby, then ordered stuff online. She did not do the whole theme thing, but ordered posters and little framed prints of things she likes. It’s all small and portable. She does have one giant bolster kind of pillow that we got on Amazon. She uses it a lot for working on her bed (leans against it). No throw pillows, etc

Do you have an actual college student who does? My kids hate them. Just set up college grad in first apartment. Bought only bottom sheets, pillow cases and 2 blankets. They hate comforters as well---and blankets are much easier to wash without them falling apart (and boys are not likely to deal with a duvet cover)

Yup! Much easier to wash a sheet then the whole comforter and if the room is warm they just take the comforter off. I assumed this was almost universal...which is why sheet sets have 3 parts.

Oh, we use the top and bottom sheets at home as adults. I agree it is much easier to wash the top sheet than the full comforter/duvet cover. however, the kids complained so now they dont use top sheets and just use blankets which are easy to wash (vs a comforter or duvet cover). It's their choices as teens/early adults. As long as stuff gets washed I don't care

Most Gen Z do not. She has a duvet cover that she washes.

The the teapot, the water filter, the tennis racket, the basketball, the yoga mat, most of the pillows, the night light, the plastic dish ware, many of the snacks I sent.

Room darkening curtains were a waste for my kid.

I almost laughed, except one night of puking in bed from a night of heavy partying and your kid will realize what a horrible parent you are.

My DD decorated her room. My DS never decorated his room aside from putting up posters and a few Christmas lights. He didn't care. She did.

As to OP's question: DD brought FAR too many clothes!! She needed only about half of them. A pair of sandals, two pairs of sneakers, flip flops for the shower, and some winter boots is all she ended up wearing. The extra shoes just gathered dust. One or two sun dresses, several pairs of jeans and other pants, t-shirts, sweaters, coats and jackets, and some jewelry and scarves. She brought some extra pillows for her bed, but ended up buying one of those big pillows with arms (reading pillow?) for her sophomore year. Posters, fairy lights, a decorative lamp and a small (plastic) chest of drawers to use as a bedside table, plus a scarf to throw over it. And some curtains with tension rods to block out light so she could sleep in the AM. Her freshman dorm room only had one window. Lamp, toiletries, computer and school type supplies. But that's basically it! Maybe a rug, but they get soooo dirty, and the kids never wash them. And I insisted on a Dust Buster, but I don't think it ever got used. Oh, and water filter pitcher for clean water, water bottle, and mini-fridge -- essential.

But not much else, especially clothing. Kid don't wear tons and tons of clothes, and if they bring too many, they never do their laundry!!

^ Exactly who is the horrible parent? (hint - it's not the one whose child didn't need extra top sheet or towels).

My DD told me the other day everyone threw out their Brita filter pitchers.

Oh and neither kid used the nice robes I got them. I thought they’d be essential for travel to the hall bathroom but apparently not!

Top sheets are not like underwear -- they're not the mark of a civilized human being. We use a bottom sheet and a duvet with a duvet cover and wash the bottom sheet and cover. I hate top sheets and have never used them -- they get tangled up. There's no point as long as you're washing the bedding that touches your actual body.

LOL. I would make a bet on my DS *never* taking off the duvet cover to wash it, but I'm not sure who would take the other side of the bet. I personally would hate to have to take a duvet cover off and put it back on weekly. I think there's at least a chance that he will wash sheets, since he's used to doing that at home.

We didn’t get the MUST HAVE mattress topper for a twin xl bed for nine months. The Kid was moving to an apartment for sophomore year and getting a full or queen sized bed so it was a waste of money to us. The kid survived!

A white board

plates and bowls (2 of each) that I thought he might want for eating snacks in his room

And we had to send more bowls and spoons (suite of 4 boys, we had sent 4 of everything, but the boys weren't great [understatement] about dishes). They ate a lot of cereal in their suite!
