13:00 Yes if your team's players do not come to their own team's tryouts, that's a bad sign!

19:15 - the degree of integration varies, though. That's the point. The clubs with independently hired coaches have less movement than those where the kids are ranked within, but coached by a team.

I'm not 19:15, but did not quite follow this. Do you mean independently hired coaches are less likely to move kids among teams? What does "ranked within, but coached by a team" mean? Sorry -- we are new to travel soccer! Thanks

I'd appreciate clarification as well, and DC's been playing travel soccer for five years.

I'm saying something pretty simple - sorry if I wasn't clear:

Some clubs have all the teams in each age group practice together, work together, and be coached together under one head coach. (Yeah, the kids are still on different teams, ranked by ability, and each may have a "main" coach.) Some clubs give each team more autonomy, and each coach works independently because the coach is hired by the parents.

Not an expert here - just gleaning what I glean about other clubs from sideline chit-chat with the parents who are "shopping" for a new club for their kid.

There are several models. An A and a B team, coaches hired by club, some practices together, some apart. An A and a B team, coaches hired by parents, always practice together. And so on. All sorts of permutations. What you look for starting out is a great coach in a stable club.

Good luck to all during tryouts.

Does anyone participating in McLean tryouts have any impressions of the process or know anything about the number of potential "openings" on the teams for players looking to move teams and/or programs? Thanks!

PP: Best bet is to check the website and email manager or coach for your child's age's team. As you may know, DOB's run August 1 - July 31. A child born in September 1996 is currently on a U-13 team.

Anonymous wrote:I am reviving a thread from last year to request any recent input regarding McLean and Vienna soccer (or other nearby clubs). Our goals are for our son to have fun, make friends and learn teamwork, and it would be an added bonus (for friendships, benefits of being a member of team, etc) if he developed into a strong enough player to be competitive at the high school level. Our son is deeply committed to soccer and thrives in competitive and highly regimented environments. We have heard there are significant differences in the philosphies of the two programs. A couple of examples: I believe McLean "tiers" the teams early on (A - B - C) and Vienna does not. I believe that Vienna uses parent coaches and McLean does not (and for this and other reasons McLean's program also is more expensive). We understand it can be very difficult to switch teams/clubs down the road. Thanks so much.
