LOL, no. I thought you were going to say you're late 40's and even then I'd say that's a little old for DC but not completely uncommon. |
I was 31 when I had my first. Had NO friends or peer coworkers with children.
Now at 48, my first is looking at colleges and my friends and coworkers are looking at preschools! |
Most of the moms in Hyattsville were 38-42 for their first. On of my friends had her first at 50 with IVF in another country. |
Like, upper NW or Springfield?
In upper middle class DC circles, especially women with careers, 32-42 seems standard. In suburbs or less elite circles, late 20s to late 30s. I was 26 and felt like a teen mom. Now it's amazing to feel younger! |
I’ve read on here that 30 is young in DC but I didn’t find that to be true. I had my first at 30 and second at 32 and never felt I was young. We live in Silver Spring now and most parents of my kids’ friends are around my age or a couple of years older. But I always felt average. |
I had my one and only at 30 and MULTIPLE doctors commented about how young I was…I was also asked many times at playgrounds if I was the nanny. I am now 42 with a 12 year old and most of her friend’s parents are at least five years older than I am (if not more). Anything under 35 in this area is considered young. |
Ha I clicked on this because I'm contemplating having a second at 42/43 and was interested in the responses. 34! I had my first at 37. The only person who thought I was an "older mom" was the 27 year old in my office who was pregnant at the same time as me and was stunned to discover I was a decade older. But it's cultural, too -- some people are from backgrounds where it's weird to wait, but among professional women in DC, waiting is normal. |
I got pregnant with my first at 29 and all our friends thought we were crazy. Had my second at 31. All the mom friends I made in those early years were easily 7-10 years older than me.
Now my kids are 12 and 10 and all our old friends who thought we were having kids so young have infants and toddlers and honestly I’m so glad my kids will be adults by the time I’m 50. Maybe it’s because I’ve already done it and exhausted my well of sleep-deprivation and patience, but the thought of dealing with babies and toddlers with my current energy level just feels impossible. |
I was 26 and people acted like I was a teen mom… 34 seems about average. |
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. 34 is young in DC. Under 30 is basically a teen pregnancy.
I had my kids at 36 and 38. All my mom friends from preschool and kindergarten are +/- 3 years in age from me because we all had 40th BD parties around the same time. |
34?? That's cute.
|
Over 45.
You’re young. |
Agree. Had my first at 42 with no help. |
Your personal experience does not apply across the board. |
Has this thread turned into a contest on who's the oldest first time mom? Because that's not a game I'd want to win. |
