Lately I've been browsing these two sites a lot and seeing a lot of things I like, at prices I can live with. But how am I supposed to get any idea of the quality of what I am buying? They very rarely tell you the brand/manafacturer, and often there is very little detail about the materials. For larger items like furniture that would be virtually impossible to return, this makes me very nervous. Also, it kind of seems like they re-show the same things over and over, just in different "collections". Are there really deals to be had on these sites? Any advice on how to figure out what is decent? Thanks! |
I've been able to find the same items just by Googling the description. Even if you don't have the brand/manufacturer, you can match it up by the picture of the item. Usually I'm able to find what I'm looking for, then you can compare prices and online reviews of the item. I usually buy from Joss and Main. Was very pleased with a large mirror but not as pleased with a lamp that ended up looking rather cheap in person. It's a toss up. |
You're better off sticking with Overstock.com. The prices aren't anything that great on those sites -- they just have nice marketing. |
I ordered two pillows from One King's Lane and the quality was unbelievably poor. Very cheap polyester, rough fabric, uneven seams, pattern was printed rather than woven. Original price was listed at $100 for each pillow. I have hesitated to order anything since then. |
Well, I have had great luck with OKL but I read the descriptions very carefully. I have bought and loved towels, sheets, dhurrie rug, pillows, pitcher, Christmas decor, and Jayes things ( like metal trays and towel holders). I do sometimes google items. I also don't buy if the manufacturer is not listed. The high end towels and sheets are always named (sferra, coyuchi, linen et cie) and you should know those lines well enough. I have even had success with some of the " vintage" items but its riskier. |
I have ordered from both as well. In fact, I was just googling to see if the two sites are related because I frequently get sales notices from them within moments of each other. I ordered several coffee related items from OKL and was very pleased. However, I just returned a rug because the color wasn't at all what had appeared on the website (don't know for sure who's image is inaccurate but my computer is brand new and high end, so....). Unfortunately, lots of items are not returnable. I ordered a painting from J&M and it matched the image and I like it. |
I like both sites quite a bit. I generally stick to smaller items and have had no problem with those. The one large piece of furniture we bought (chest of drawers) arrived broken and needed to be fixed.
I do google before I buy anything and find that the prices offered are sometimes comparable to (or only slightly less than) Wayfair or something like that. |
I ordered a table from OKL, however, when shipment arrived, it missing one skew that I need to use glue to reposition them since its non returnable. |
Joss and Main and All Modern is owned by Wayfair, they launched the website in 2010. I've noticed that when comparing prices between Joss and Main and Kings Lane on identical pieces of furniture or rugs, One Kings Lane will prize their items up to $300 higher than Joss and Main. |
looks like the stuff you can get at Home Goods or T.J. Maxx |
The reviews I read online of OKL kept me away. |
exactly |
I've been happy buying from OKL when (1) it was a brand I know and trust and (2) I've googled the item to make sure it isn't available elsewhere cheaper (happens allll the time with flash sale sites, esp. Gilt). I did notice that they have virtually the entire Target occasional chair collection online, more expensive than Target, so do be careful. But you can get some great deals if you're savvy about it. |
I've found a lot of the same items at homegoods for less. |
On OKL you can get a lot of brands for steep discount, though you have to know who to look for. Arteriors, Visual Comfort, and Stark, for example, can be more than 50% off even their "discount" online retailers. You can also search a photo to see if it comes up elsewhere at a different price point.
If you get something crappy from them, their customer service is great. I've gotten both money back and credit for something that price dropped 6 mos later, something damaged, something cheap. (I got a refund in full for a purchase 6 mos after when it fell apart and I didn't have to return it.) They've got good artwork too, especially in the vintage or designer sales. |
