Cat: diarrhea after anesthia?

Anonymous
Our 6 yo male cat was under anesthesia last Friday for his annual dental cleaning and, ever since then, his poops have been (sorry if TMI) very runny and VERY stinky! Otherwise, he seems totally fine. Is this common to happen after anesthesia? (It had never happened to him before, though?) Could he have picked up somethign at the vet? I just keep thinking it'll clear up and, let's see, it has been 4 going on 5 days now. I am monitoring him closely to make sure he does not get dehydrated but he doesn't seem to be and he eats all wet food and gets plenty of water also added to his food. Maybe it was the stress of having been to the vet? But again he's never reacted this way in the past after a vet visit. Any thoughts? Thank you in advance.

our cat had diarrhea after she was spayed, which also required anesthesia. I called the vet, who prescribed flagyl and a probiotic. Cleared it right up.

Thank you so much. Ok, I am going to call our vet and see if he recommends something like that. Thank you for your reply.

You can give them a small amount of pepto bismol. I had a vet that gave me a syringe style medication thing (like you might use with younger kids as well), and said it would help with my cats diarrhea. If it doesn't get better after a couple days then the cat should be seen to find the reason why it has the diarrhea.
