Now, if this were McCain, people would be freaking their freaks over it. |
My only complaint is that Obama considers the meeting a mistake. I am sick and tired of his hyper-sensitivity toward Muslims, particularly American Muslims. The centerpiece of Obama's foreign policy is that he will meet with our enemies. Yet, he apologizes when his staff meets with American citizens?
Obama's biggest weakness is his failure to apply his principles to the Middle East and Islam. He consistency chooses political expediency. |
Seems a bit over the top in its anxiety about Muslims. CAIR as an organization to worry about? Really? I'm not that familiar with it but it never struck me as particularly extremist.
Seems like everyone is driven by fear these days....sigh... |
Look up CAIR then. In many people's minds, mine included, theirs is a radical agenda. http://www.amazon.com/They-Must-Be-Stopped-Radical/dp/0312383630/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1223899738&sr=8-1 This author makes a compelling case. I read her first book which I highly recommend. To me the non-religious, or secular, members of this board truly underestimate the influence faith has on the activities and agendas of the religious. Its a kind of blinder, since you don't get it, it doesn't exist. |
I looked up CAIR. They're working for fair treatment for Muslims in the US, along side such organizations as the ACLU and they are actively opposed to terrorism. http://www.cair.com/AboutUs/25FactsAboutCAIR.aspx Since when is working for civil liberties a "radical agenda"? Makes me wonder what your agenda is. Are you opposed to equal treatment of people regardless of their religion? Like I said, people are driven by fear.... |
I prefer to judge CAIR by its actions, not its website. The have raised money for 'Islamic charities' that are fronts for HAMAS, and even Chuck Schumer, hardly a Christian conservative, has publicaly noted that CAIR'S associations with terrorist groups is problematic.
Fear can be healthy - it stops us from crossing a busy street against the light, causes us to buy insurance to protect our families, and allows us to prepare for our own survival. I don't fear that Obama is a Islamic terrorist, definitely. But once again, his associations are problematic. |
I can't believe the PP would trumpet a bogus, biased, incredibly xenophobic book as "evidence" against a US-based civil rights organization. After a career of academic and policy work on the Middle East, this kind of ignorance just makes me want to weep. I am perfectly prepared to criticize CAIR and some of its affiliates, but generally speaking its aims are laudable. Unfortunately, every Arab-American or Muslim organization has long been the tart of smears... and far more intensively since 9/11. As for the Gabriel book, can you imagine a book about any other ethnic or religious minority entitled "They Must Be Stopped" that wouldn't be greeted with immediate and universal denunication?? In 21st century America this kind of ethnic/religious hatred is disgusting. |
Your fear of CAIR is like refusing to drive on the freeway because you might get in an accident, when actually freeways are safer than two-lane state roads. The possibility of an accident isn't zero but your fear is incredibly overblown and keeps you from leading a normal life. Schumer does not impress me. He represents a strongly pro-Israel state so of course I would expect him to say this. |
Am I the only one reading this thinking this must have been what it was like when Nero fiddled while Rome burned? |
Yes.
And with good reason -- because Rome isn't burning! |
