So disgusted at McCain for inciting racism!

Anonymous
I understand that he is desperate and negative ads go with the political territory but McCain and Palin actually look happy and do nothing at their rallies when their supporters shout "Kill him" and other racial outbursts. How is this in any way acceptable? Its shocking that two national candidates in 2008 would support this.

McCain has lost all my respect and will NEVER regain it. He is making the Republican party look awful and there are reasonable moderates and conservatives out there with good ideas but you would never know it from what he is doing.

There are rumors that those disrupting the republican rallies are actually democratic operatives attempting to garner just the response you have posted.

Give me a break. Have you seen the videos of these rallies? Do you think Democrats are infiltrating thousands of people? BTW, today McCain was trying to put the genie back in the bottle and actually grabbed the microphone from a woman that called Obama a terrorist. McCain said that Obama was a family man.

McCain actually did something decent for a change?

Your response sounds rather Rovian to twist reality.

Glad to hear he did that. Is it on Youtube?

I just saw on tv where McCain said that it would not be scary/he would not be scared if Obama were President. I applaud McCain's character for saying this, to avoid a (racially) volatile country following the elections.

This is what one would have thought McCain would have said from the start. But by now his crowds are so thirsty for blood that they booed him for trying to calm them down. You can see it (along with a report about the "troopergate" committee) at http://talkingpointsmemo.com/.

There are rumormongers who will say anything to further their cause.

Now I'm worried that McCain's "decent" response (a day late and a dollar short) will somehow garner sympathy with voters.

I wouldn't worry about that. For every vote it earns him, it has costed him a vote from his base. Go watch the Freepers hyperventilate over this:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2102744/posts?q=1&;page=1#1

One example (referring to McCain):

"All I can do is shake my head. Is the man totally insane or just acting like it?"

I don't think he is at risk of alienating these insane Freepers. They're disgusted with McCain, much as they would be disgusted with their beloved football team (or Monster Truck team) when it screws up. It doesn't mean they're going to start supporting Obama, or not go to the polls.

All these vocal hillbillies did was make more moderate voters want to distance themselves from McCain. McCain's measured (read: compulsary in a rational society) response will bring some of those people back. I just hope not too many.

I understand your sentiment but nevertheless this thing has gotten so ugly and scary that I feel relieved that McCain said what he said. Maybe he hasn't completely turned his back on that once-vaunted integrity he is supposed to have had. That's important to me even if it gets more people to vote for him.

I actually felt bad for McCain when I watched 2 different clips of him trying to assuage the hysteria that his campaign has whipped up. What a shameful way to have to end your political career, hedging on your own campaign's hate speech, it's all so contrary to the courage and integrity that was supposed to be his hallmark. The sheepish way he tried to correct his own supporters (leaping to Obama's defense by acknowledging that he is a citizen, among other things) seems to suggest that McCain is decent enough to be at least a little bit disgusted with what his campaign has spawned. His half-hearted actions now don't exonerate him, at least for me, but it just made the whole thing a little more tragic.

And btw, since I'm parsing words, it does further depress me that McCain answered the older woman in the audience who accused Obama of being an Arab by saying, no he's not, he's a decent family man. As though an Arab can't be a decent family man. I'm glad to see the record corrected on Obama's ethnic heritage, but how far we have sunk as a nation when it's unremarkable to demonize an entire ethnicity. I wonder how this little exchange will be read among Arab-Americans, who actually make up a small but important voting bloc in a couple of swing states, including Ohio. Historically, they've leaned Republican...
