I miss McCain 2000

Anonymous
I am not overjoyed about Obama but will be voting for him - primarily because the thought of McCain dieing in office (God forbid) and our country being in Palin's hands terrifies me. It's also very disappointing though how far to the right McCain's run this time around. I loved the McCain of 2000 that had only scorn for the "agents of intolerance" - not this 2008 guy that picks one of them to be a heart-beat away from the Presidency.

Condolences, PP. I wouldn't have voted for McCain either way but I had thought we would survive okay if he won. But he doesn't seem to be the man I thought he was. And Palin scares me more than ever now that she seems to be whipping up an ugly sentiment at her rallies.

I didn't think I could dislike/hate Palin any more with her absurd existencel Just then, I see another side of her insidious innards. Because we don't have enough problems with this country, she has to rile up the suppressed racist feelings of the masses.

Oh, please. And I agree with you on McCain 2000, but he didn't become the nominee then, did he? Such is the nature of politics. I also really liked Paul Tsongas.

" also really liked Paul Tsongas. "

Yeah! So good to hear his name again. This was one of the first campaigns I volunteered for and loved Tsongas!

McCain 2000 was wonderful, but as the PP said, it did not win him the nomination because he could not get the support of the republican base. Had he done so, I suspect the general election in 2000 would have looked a lot like this year's version. Sadly, the extreme folks in the republican party are just nasty, in my opinion. I suspect many McCain supporters this time around are truly hoping that he is still the man we believed him to be then ... he earned his reputation over many, many years and I refuse to believe that his inability or reticence to honestly say what he feels about some of the people supporting him reflects the true person that he is.

Is he a good man who wants to win so he can do good things? Or is he a good man who has put his goodness aside in an effort to win for winning's sake? Hopefully the former, but I do not believe he will win, so it is moot.
