the campaign's ugly turn

Anonymous
Is anyone else disturbed by the hate on display lately at McCain/Palin rallies? Racial slurs shouted at camera crew? Shouts of "terrorist" "kill him" and "off with his head"? McCain/Palin and their surrogates seem to be purposefully fueling this anger. It's not right and it's dangerous. I'm feeling outraged but also sad at the ugly turn this campaign has taken.

Here's a (relatively mild) example from outside the Lehigh U rally. The last minute of the video brought hopeful tears to my eyes.

Don't speak badly about the honorable John McCain. He cries himself to sleep every night due to his dismay over being forced to wage such a hate-filled campaign.

This is just utter desperation because the Republicans are trailing badly in the polls. It will only make them less popular.

This is quite disturbing.

These people are so ignorant and that is really sad. I do not think the fact they support McCain is ignorant but what they have to say really says alot about them.

It's sad and scary. My completely normal, intelligent friend who works in the financial sector in NYC started spewing this Socialist bullcrap.

Let's see what she says when she loses that job and needs her new free healthcare.

Does McCain encourage these radical, possibly racist, deluded supporters of his? I'm sure Obama has nutcases supporting him. It seems to me that of the two of them, McCain has shown far more independent thinking and willingness to vote against his natural (i.e., Republican) constituency. McCain opposed the Republican majority and/or Bush on the conduct of the Iraq war (the need for a surge), torture, global warming, and immigration, to name a few issues. Can someone point out to me occasions on which Obama has voted against the Democratic position? Not that it matters, however, because Obama will win. I just hate for people to belittle what McCain has accomplished in his long legislative career.

What scary people. Are they going to start a race riot if Obama wins?

This is a truly terrifying video. And, as for belittling McCain's accomplishments, he is doing that himself by choosing to take the lowest possible road in this campaign.

wow... just wow. These people truly scare me. They sound like re-born Nazis.

"Voting against the party," ironically, seems to be the latest Republican talking point, since McCain said it several times in the debate the other night. My first thought when I heard him say it was that Obama voted against the war in Iraq at the very beginning, when most Democrats were too politically scared to do so.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't McCain one of the staunchest supporters of the surge?

Yeah, these people scare me. As a woman of color, I feel safer in a ghetto than in small town America, hands-down.

Exactly - and one of the most chilling parts of the clip is when, at the end, you see that the "protesters" (Obama supporters) that they are speaking to that way are, for the most part, WHITE UNION WORKERS - can you imagine the hostility if they had been people of color or young people?

At least the Obama supporters look peaceful and sane in comparison to the hostile geriatric McCain crowd who seem to be missing their white hoods and burning crosses.

I've noticed that not just in this video clip but in other interviews with audience members and commentators. Why are the Conservatives/Republicans so rancidly angry?

If the Republicans were limited to just the old and geriatric, I could find solace in that their generation will die out sooner or later. It seems such a waste to cling to closed minded backwardness at a young age of 20-something when the world is at your feet.
