"That One"

I really bothered me that McCain referred to Obama as "that one". Its shows a lotal lack of respect and (I know I will get flack for this), reminds me of people who refer to black people as "those people". Regardless of McCains thought on Obama's fitness, I think that the very fact that Obama is in the race means that he has accomplished something and that he deserves to have his name used.

I am an Obama supporter and before the Palin pick, I would have been only slightly disappointed if on nov 5 McCain was POTUS-elect, now I have lost all respect for the man. BTW, did anyone else notice that instead of shaking Obama's hand at the end of the debate, McCain just steered Cindy toward Obama.

I'm voting for "That One".

Well, we are talking about McCain here. Same man who called his wife a "c*nt" and a "trollop". Can't say he exudes respect or character. If he calls his wife names in public and calls Obama "that one", just imagine what he thinks of the American people. What will he call Sarah when she screws up?

I agree with you, OP. "That one" is the singular of "you people." McCain should have taken a lesson from Ross Perot there.

I'm one of "those people" and I too will be voting for "that one."

Yes, Senator McCain, that's "President That One" to you.

I understand that politics is dirty but I think it's deplorable that Palin and McCain are inciting this racism. They don't come out and say the "N" word, but they're certainly let those types of feelings rise to the surface for many in their flock.

I, too, would only have been mildly disappointed (which I mentioned to a friend yesterday) had McCain won this election, PRIOR to his Palin pick. McCain is nothing more than a dinosaur relic of the Cold War era when he lived in a world of privilege. He's older than the oldest baby boomer and he and his sidekick keep alive the flames of hatred of those who are non-Christian and non-white. Palin calls herself a Christian?

They shook hands at the beginning. At the end, they walked over to the center and blocked Brokaw's view of the script; that may have been for a handshake, but they were off-camera. A bit later, McCain tapped Obama on the shoulder, and when Obama turned around he held out his hand toward McCain, and McCain pointed to Cindy, whose hand Obama shook. I think it was just a brief moment of disorientation rather than disrespect.

Reading McCain's lips, I think when he introduced Cindy, he said to Obama, "Here's this one."

I'm not sure "that one" was a huge problem for me - could have been just a slip, but I was pretty annoyed that he assumes no one had heard of Fannie or Freddie before the most recent mess - I consider that extremely condescending to assume people hadn't heard of major organizations that deal with housing issues before. I know I knew about them in college if not before.

Maybe he was just assuming everyone shares his own level of knowledge.

Well, it's clear that Palin didn't know how Fannie & Freddie worked. You probably belong to a different demographic than the majority of the Americans and the outliers that McPalin are trying to reach. McCain also assumes that most people are stupid and that many women will vote for a girl. Wish he, at least, picked a smart girl.

Referring to a person as "that one" begs the question "One what?" - it's dehumanizing and meant to be.

See ""That One": McCain's Use of Dehumanization as Hate Speech" below.

Does anyone think they might be overreacting just a "tiny" bit? I sure think so.

Maybe, maybe not. McCain should have known better, but like a PP said, he's dropped the c-bomb on his wife, so maybe we shouldn't expect too much from him.

My fifteen year old son did not notice "that one". What he did notice that neither candidate answered the questions they were asked in a direct and non-bullshit way. It reminded me of going to the movies. After you've sat through all the previews, you sometimes forget what you came to see. After they snowed me with their oft repeated campaign rhetoric I could barely remember the original question. I so wanted one of the people that read a question to retort - "look, that BS did not answer my question! Mr. Moderator - make him answer my question!!!!!"

Maybe, maybe not. Don't you think the fact he addressed a fellow candidate in this fashion says alot about him?

I interpreted like a poster on another thread -- that McCain blanked out Obama's name for a moment.
