King Abdullah Academy Closing: FCPS Buy for HS?

Doubt it. FCPS classrooms just have less open space. My kid had 34 kids in her 4th grade class. They didn’t remodel the room, they just jammed more tables and chairs in.

It's good to know we'll get a new high school with the "separate entries and play spaces" for high school students.

We'll need to see exactly what types of modifications are required, and how much it will cost on top of the advertised price.

It will cost less than $300M

All of Floris, McNair, and Fox Mill go to Carson. Most of Coates and Crossfield go there, along with a small part of Oak Hill (rest of Oak Hill goes to Franklin).

The people who are being really aggressive on the topic seem to be Crossfield folks insisting that they'll have dibs on the new school.

I don't think anyone has "dibs."

The Crossfield folks currently go to Oakton --which is a very long way.
Chantilly (while projected to lose membership) is the school that needs relief.

I could see Fox Mill staying with South Lakes. South Lakes is not going to want to give them up.

Crossfield is an anomaly in that much of its population lives closer to other elementary schools, but those are neighborhood elementary schools and Franklin Farm and the surrounding neighborhoods east of Fairfax County Parkway don't have a neighborhood elementary school, so they got placed in Crossfield which is on a busy road without much of a neighborhood surrounding it (except for the one that doesn't want to be there, LOL). Those neighborhoods are much closer to this new school than any other high school in the area.

There was a lot of talk about the Sully district being sent to Oakton during last nights discussion, so I can’t imagine a scenario that doesn’t place Crossfield at either the new school, or less likely, South Lakes. I’m guessing the new school will include Coates, McNair, Floris, and then some combination of Oak Hill, Fox Mill, or Crossfield. If it’s Oak Hill and Fox Mill, then Crossfield would be sent to South Lakes.

It would make more sense to keep Fox Mill at South Lakes and move Crossfield to the new school so only one group of people has to switch schools and so kids in AP can stay at an AP school (assuming it's an AP school).

FCPS could look to MCPS for how they are doing the boundaries for all the new high schools opening up there.

The boundary process can stay in tact for the eastern part of the county that wouldn't be impacted. This impacts Chantilly, Westfield, Oakton, South Lakes, and maybe also Herndon and Centerville pyramids.

While folks in the eastern part of the county won't be redistricted to the new high school, they are claiming they will save hundreds of millions by purchasing this property.

I'd like to see how they might put some of those savings to use renovating and/or expanding schools in eastern Fairfax first before they move kids in that part of the county.

Right now it's looking like western Fairfax gets expanded schools + a brand-new school while eastern Fairfax just gets the promise of boundary changes. FTS.

Sounds like you want to move!

It’ll cost less than $1 million if you believe Mateo Dunne’s statements last night.

I don’t, but maybe you all do.

But it doesn’t look all that special compared with the Langley, Falls Church, and Oakton renovations. The new Western High School will be a notch higher with the pool and decorative outdoor fountains.

Ah, but if they send those Coates and McNair kids there you’ll get a daily reminder it’s just a public school in a shinier-than-average building. Can access be restricted to Floris, Fox Mill, and Crossfield students?
