What chemicals were they pumping into the house just before it exploded?

Tear gas.

Would the tear gas have ignited the explosion? Sincere question.

Omg no.

OMG, do some research FFS

Certain types of CS gas powder are extremely explosive as airborne dust in certain concentrations. This is what caused the explosion and fire at the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, TX in 1993, as well as the fire in the California cabin where murder a police officer/murder suspect was barricaded.

Arlington Police emphasized they were specifically using a nonflammable agent, BECAUSE some types are flammable.

It was natural gas.

There is no other reason why the suspect would have been shooting off a flare gun (which shoots flaming flares) inside his own house.

This was a natural gas explosion.

News reports say that authorities had turned off the gasline to the house earlier in the standoff. Perhaps there was enough residual gas, though? The way that house exploded and collapsed I presumed this guy had some sort of stockpiled explosives.

That explosion was NOT a natural gas + atmospheric air in an explosive concentration type of explosion . I’ve seen many of those, and there is essentially no smoke produced by such combustion. There’s a quick surge of flame and expansion along a shock-front, then the fuel is consumed almost immediately. The smoke produced afterwards is from things ignited BY the explosion, which are then starting to burn and producing their own smoke. But there is NO smoke produced from a gas explosion itself.

That explosion looked to me like a low explosive materials explosion. Lots of white smoke produced by the explosion itself. If I had to guess, I’d say maybe black powder or potassium perchlorate or some similar type of sulphur or potassium based explosive compound. It was very slow-acting, maybe even too slow for black powder. Could’ve been some kind of fireworks formulation of some kind.

But it was NOT natural gas.

Don't they have renters insurance or home owners insurance to cover the loss of their possessions?

$40k for your things in a tiny duplex seems like a lot of money to me.

FFS you're begrudging these people money that people donated to them because they ended up in a $hit situation they had no control over??? What's wrong with you?

Let's blow up your house and see how you feel. I'm sure $40K would be chump change in that situation.

For God's sake ladies, FLARES ARE COMBUSTIBLE. Stop chattering away about nonsense and read before you post. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flare_(countermeasure)

As someone who lost everything in a house fire, you get a current value of your possessions. The used sheets on the bed that cost $80 now are worth $10. It’s like when insurance pays you out for a totaled car. It never covers the current cost.

You pay extra every month for an option known as Replacement Cost. Then you get the $80 to cover the cost of Replacing the sheets.

That assumes that they documented all of their possessions.

This poor family. They lost their "home" and security. I am so glad they are physically okay. They will need a place to stay, every meal/snack covered, the most basic necessities - some things they won't even realize until they actually need it. I worry about the mental toil on the kids... who may have had a favorite blanket or shirt and the peace of mind of the parents.

Seriously. Also, it wasn’t a “tiny duplex.” It had a 2-story rear addition. The listing said it was 5 bed, 3.5 bath.

Wow, who are you jerks?? $40K is actually not that much money, regardless of the house size. A sofa alone nowadays can cost $2000.

It depends on what you bought. You can buy either current or replacement coverage. Current is obviously cheaper, but…

I furnish AirBNBs a 3 bedroom, 1100 sqft we did a year ago cost about 15K and that's getting a bunch of stuff from an awesome thrift store with real wood items. For sure 40K won't go far.

Imagine every piece of furniture you own (we don’t even have crazy expensive tastes, but 3 bedroom sets + office furniture + dining room table/chairs + a couple couches is easily 15k (built up over a period of years). Think of every article of clothing you own, every piece of decor, sports equipment and instruments, electronics, etc. Now imagine you are having to do extra takeout because you don’t have a kitchen. You may need to take time off work (maybe even unpaid). Perhaps they want to splurge on something a little nice like a trip to get away for Christmas since they don’t have a home to bring new toys to. Insurance will take a while to pay out and the land issues could be weird with trying to re-build.

I don’t begrudge these people their GoFundMe one bit. I’m sure they’d gladly trade the money for their normal lives/home again.
