She's obviously problematic, but this take is also problematic.

She's a yoga teacher. Is that being a huge under-achiever? I feel like society needs to value things other than just making money. That's pretty much how we in the US measure people's worth--by how much money they make. Being a yoga teacher and opening a studio is a worthwhile occupation. Sad that she feels the need to lie.

DP. I agree it's a worthy profession, but as someone in these high-achieving circles (spouse and I are PhD/MD couple), there's a lot of pressure on the kids to have at least similar levels of achievement. I don't think it's right, but the pressure is there. I'm sure she's been asked in her younger life whether she was applying to medical or law school.

Um, welcome to most Asian families. We were constantly asked if we were going to be engineers, lawyers or doctors. You don’t see us making random things up to help us cope with that pressure. That is some whitesplaining if I’ve ever heard it.

Um, wrong take there. Did you miss "She's obviously problematic"?

OBVIOUSLY not justifying what she did. Just saying that saying she's "a huge underachiever" because she's a yoga teacher (and presumably because yoga teachers don't make a lot of money) is also problematic. Just like huge pressure from your family/culture to do something you might hate because it makes them look good is also problematic.

I don't think it is really about the money, for a lot of parents like hers it is about the educational achievement. She (probably? maybe?) got a BA from NYU and stopped there. Like many girls from well off families, I bet her parents were supporting her living in NYC and probably helped with the yoga studio. Coming from the type of privilege, and presumably and emphasis on education that she had, that is a child that is a failure to launch. I don't think they would love her making a lot of money in a way they view as kind of cheap either. Would be curious to know how they feel about her present situation.

I thought she was a successful yoga instructor? Owned a studio or something? Is that all a lie? I would have assumed she was making six-figures -- obviously not millions, but NYU alum in her late 20s making six-figures is hardly unimpressive.
Owned a studio? Six figures? NO. Minimum wage. Was part of an NYU program while a student, where a bunch of students led basic yoga sessions in exchange for donations to NYU? yes.

There are a lot of seemingly genuine comments about her time as a yoga instructor / "owner"? That's not true? She was obviously doing something with the 5-6 years between NYU and meeting Alec.

She was not pretending to be a Mestizo, she was appropriating Spanish culture. It is trendy to be “different” or “ambiguous” though, which could have prompted her to adopt this persona. Will be interesting to see what the next decade will bring regarding trends.

Mother was a doctor and father a lawyer. Ireland’s comment about “or who raised you” was telling. Does Hillary identify with Spanish culture because she was raised by a native Spanish nanny? She’s still a fraud. Plenty of opportunities to be truthful but I wonder what the relationship is with the mom. She is definitely damaged and I do feel bad about that. She likely doesn’t even realize she’s damaged. That would require too much courage.

Yes, she did teach yoga by donation at first, at Yoga to the People, where she did her teacher-training. With a partner Mike Patton, she leased a space and opened a studio called Yoga Vida in 2010. Perhaps her parents backed her. By 2014 she stated in interviews that she had stepped away from ownership, though she was still practicing.

During and after NYU she taught at the original yoga to the people in the east village. Donation based classes. It took a while to get off the ground but eventually these classes were packed and they expanded quickly. Hilary taught almost every day/multiple times a day.

Most of the teachers taught for hours towards their certification but then I'm sure she made something towards the end.

She was a co-owner at yoga vida after she left NYU and yttp. The other owner was a once investment banker (I believe) someone who had a lot of start up cash. Unclear how much of a partner she was/how much financial stake she had. Over the lady few years she stopped having much to do with yoga vida. It seemed like a seemless transition out.

This article said she opened a yoga studio right out of college.

This part didn't age well:

How I eat when I’m alone: Bark Thins. But I would eat that in front of you. I have no shame.

That would have been a good cover. But no, I doubt there was a nanny involved or wouldn't she have already said so? Just like I doubt all the alleged time in Spain as a child, since she's provided no proof. She's only 36, digital cameras were a thing all of her teens...

It's seen as trendy now. Hilaria has had this persona since at least mid-2011. It had nothing to do with trendiness, it's her own personal quirk.

Nope, it’s been trendy for at least 10 years now. To be ambiguous, exotic and usually darker skinned.

So because Arianna Grande had a nose job and bronzer Hilaria lied about being Spanish?

Does anyone follow deux moi (the gossip handle) on Instagram? She just did a story with screen shots of DCUM. We famous y’all 😂
Anonymous
No, Hilaria is one of MANY who are pretending to be something other than themselves. Lets be real, it’s deceptive to change your entire face, body, skin color, hair, no matter what the motive. Hilaria got caught up in it, like many others, just maybe to that extreme.

Please tell that to all of the “exotic” Muslim women who got harassed after 9/11 and continue to be harassed.
Anonymous
No, let’s go there and call out anyone and everyone pretending to be something they are clearly not.
