This may seem really dumb or trivial, I don't know.
My husband and I are talking about TTC relatively soon. I've had a list in my head for a while of all the ducks we need to get in a row first (finances, our relationship, blah blah blah) and we finally seem to have most things in order. The one thing I'm really stuck on is my weight. I'm a pretty average-sized person, but during a long period of stress last year I put on about 20 pounds. I managed to resolve the situation and the stress (mostly), but the 20 pounds are still there. I'm eating better and exercising more, and I feel much better physically, but still: the scale is not budging. And I really hate the way I look. I've had in it my head that I need to get back to my normal weight, then TTC. But maybe that is silly. If we are successful and have a baby, I'll have to deal with weight loss after that too. What do you think? We probably won't do anything for a few months anyway, so maybe I can make some progress before then. |
I would not put off TTC for 20 lbs. You have no idea if you will have trouble conceiving and a few months can be important. There is no reason you can't do the two simultaneously. |
I agree. Weight loss before TTC is only important when there's so much extra weight as to affect your cycle, like with PCOS etc. Get on your weight loss program and have fun TTC at the same time. |
I've been in a similar boat as you, OP, but about a year down the line. I wanted to wait until I finished grad school, we had more savings, etc. We got everything done on our "list" but I was still working on losing about 25 lbs. We started TTC last year and 11 cycles later and I am realizing that you really cannot time when you get pregnant to perfection, like I felt like I could with so many other things in life. I would really not wait and would try to lose weight concurrently as PP recommended. I think this totally depends on your age though. If you are 30 or younger, you probably have more time than if you are in your early/mid 30s. |
Thanks for the responses, all.
Just as an FYI, I'm not currently waiting because of the weight issue. I am working with my doctor to wean myself off a certain medication before we can TTC, so that's why we're a few months away. I realize there's no way to know how tough it will be till we try! |
Exercise and eat healthy while TTC! |
Work on both at the same time!
Some people conceive easier when they are ideal/normal weight vs overweight ... Most certainly, if you manage you will feel better and fitter throughout pregnancy. Otoh you don't want to put off ttc, because you never know how it will happen. Unless, you have a realistic personal trainer material type of plan to 100% loose that wt within f.e. 3 months, or if there are related health issues to the weight, you don't have to put off ttc. |
If you are weaning off Adderall, be warned. I went off my ADD meds to TTC and I gained 20 pounds. Then again, I also went off Diet Coke and caffiene in general and I probably relieved my stress with too many snacks in the first few months - instead of satisfying my sweet tooth with diet soda.
I do not have severe ADD, I realize now. The meds were just a crutch and I'm glad I'm off them. I just thought after 4 years any appetite supressant side effects were gone and I wish I had realized that I needed to be extra vigilant about my weight when going off the meds. |
