Hail to the Redskins!! This kid is taking us to the superbowl! |

Listen, I hate the name. I'm also a fan. I wish they would change it, and I don't understand why they don't - greedy Dan Snyder could sell all new merchandise to the fan base.
But I also love the team, the fans, and RGIII. You don't have to embrace the racist name just because you're a fan - and you can also recognize that in the greater scheme of world problems, it's probably not that high up. |

| The name Redskins is part of the teams history and identity. I'm tired of politically correct liberals changing names every 20 years to suit some new agenda. |
Yes, this. Really not a hard concept to grasp. |

Despite vocal and legal action from Native American groups and scholars, the majority of people surveyed on the subject do not find the name offensive. Following the 1992 Super Bowl protests, the Washington Post posted a survey in which β89 percent of those surveyed said that the name should stay.β In a study performed by the National Annenberg Survey, Native Americans from the 48 continental U.S. states were asked βThe professional football team in Washington calls itself the Washington Redskins. As a Native American, do you find that name offensive or does it not bother you?β In response, ninety percent replied that the name is acceptable, while nine percent said that it was offensive, and one percent would not answer.

| The name is only racist to that segment of America that finds everything racist. |
Yeah, no. It's equivalent to "Darkies." It's a dated, racist reference to someone's skin color. It's not equivalent to "Indians." It's not the world's biggest deal, and not enough for me to stop cheering for the team, but they should just change it and make money selling all new merchandise with some new name. There's just no reason to hold onto it. |
Yup yup yup. |
Ah yes. That's the same reason I get all pissed off when someone suggests that I'm "white." |
Owning slaves was part of history, having speerate bathrooms and schools was part of history too Evolve |
A lot of pretty bad things are a part of history -- like slavery, women being denied the vote, etc. My family has lived in DC for generations and there's a lot about this city and its history that I cherish, but the ridiculously offensive name of our football team? Whats to love about that? But I am proud of the fact that the Bullets changed their name. As for every 20 years, thats the only name change I can recall in my lifetime and it was a lot longer than 20 years ago. |

When the white reporter asks, is this offensive, who wants to say yes and get in an argument when you're already in the vast minority. And to the poster with the linguistics link, go to the other forum, there is support for both sides from reputable sources.
Oh, and I am 100% with PP from 10:33 |
The Bullets became the Wizards in 1997, ye olde math genius. |
