New Year's Eve dinner ideas?

Anonymous
We are having another couple over for NYE -- it will be the 4 of us, no kids. We'll have dinner & drinks, then possibly head to another friend's party.

Any ideas on what to serve for dinner? They are Serbians who are really into their meat and potatoes!

We usually do surf and turf

OP here. Sounds great but is probably out of our budget. We don't necessarily need anything fancy -- it will be casual.

That's a nice idea. I was going to say we usually do lobster, but if they like their meat then surf and turf might be the way to go...

If you are on a budget and it is casual, just go to the grocery store and see what nice piece of meat is on sale.

Pork tenderloin is on sale here. I would do roast pork tenderloin, homemade applesauce, and maybe roasted baby potatoes. Add a dark green salad with red onions, and some nice bread?

Do a pork shoulder -- you can have great sandwiches or just pulled pork, make some coleslaw and a few sides. You can pack up some leftovers for them to take home and have plenty left for yourselves.

I was lazy during Hanukkah, so I'll be making a brisket and potato latkes (hey, meat and potatoes!) for our NYE dinner with another couple.

We always make some collard greens and black eyed peas for good luck in the New Year.

Do not do surf and turf. It is a vulgar Americanism that would not go down well with Europeans.

I would do steak, chili, or bbq.

OP here. Okay, turns out our friends bought a spiral ham that they would like to bring (they said they see Americans buying them, and want to try).

Any ideas on what to make to accompany it? I was thinking of buying some biscuits so people can do a ham biscuit sandwich if they would like.

Maybe some sort of cheesy potato dish, or homemade mac n cheese?

I'm just really not sure what to do with ham -- we don't eat it much.

Yes to the biscuits!

If you're a great biscuit baker, bless you, we need more of you.

If you're not, the recipe on the side of the box of Bisquick is easy and perfectly fine. Or, you can do the pop-out biscuits-from-a-can. Yummm... (My not-so-secret guilty pleasure.)

Make sure you have at least one gourmet quality spicy mustard. Having a couple to choose from is even better.

One cheesy side dish, and one side dish of greens. Collards are good, or kale.

BTW a nice and easy accompaniment with ham (besides the mustard) is cornichons--little French pickles from a jar.
