| Just wondering if it's pipe dream...I'm no longer worried re compensation. I just want to keep my feet in the game but am sick of logging on every single night and every single weekend (and on every vacation). Is it possible? Or should I just throw in the towel? (I realize many of you work full-time AND at night and on the weekend - not trying to be a share partner at some big firm or work on the best work of my life). |

I am an attorney and I work 3 days a week. No nights. No weekends. The key I think is not taking on too much (only take assignments that you can finish in those three days or long term assignments that you can work on the next week) and reminding people of your part time schedule constantly and setting expectations. If you start doing work at home, people will expect that they can push unrealistic amounts of work on you and you'll just suck it up and do it.
Be honest with people about your time constraints. I have had to tell partners "I can't work on that until next week because my baby is really high maintenance and it's impossible for me to get anything done at home." Good luck. I love my 3 day a week schedule. |
| I have heard of job shares in the federal government where they do this. |
Are you at a firm and what size is the firm? I can't see this flying where I work, even for a part-time schedule, because of how work flow patterns go. I would be interested to know what kind of law allows this kind of predictable work flow management. |
| Yep. I'm a fed, but my situations is really unique and I've been cautioned not to even discuss it with my peers. |
| I do. I work for howard county government. |
| I do it, and the days are flexible from week to week. I do occasionally work from home but only if I procrastinated at the office. But I don't make much money and it's kind of a niche practice. |
| I'm a fed on a 90% schedule. I work 4 days a week - 2 in the office and 2 at home for 8 hrs a day (6:30-4). No nights or weekends, unless its my own fault for slacking off and I have to meet a deadline. |
Oops, I meant 9 hrs a day. |
