Prenatal Recs for TTC?

Anonymous
We are going to be TTC in about 3-4 months and my OB said I should start to take a prenatal vitamin. Does the brand matter or can I just buy the CVS brand ones?

Thanks for the advice in advance!

When I was gearing up for TTC #1 my gyn prescribed a prenatal for me. When I actually got pregnant and starting seeing an OB I asked them to refill that prescription. They said just to take an over the counter so I started using the CVS brand. I've been taking it ever since and haven't had any problems. I'm now newly pregnant with #2, assuming it's viable.

You can buy over the counter ones (I got mine from New Chapter Organics and from the Whole Foods line) but after a few months I will say it starts to add up. I had my ob write me a prescription because insurance would cover it, and the copay was much cheaper, plus I could use my flex spending account for the copays. I now take prescription Nexa w/DHA (because I don't eat fish.)

take whatever one doesn't upset your stomach. You'll be nauseous enough later

Nature Made. Also, take them in the evening after dinner, when you've had food in your tummy all day long, as opposed to the morning. That will cut down on any nausea or tummy upset you might have.

I echo what 15:41 said. I have heard great things about Rainbow. You can get them just about anywhere now and they are pretty good but were very rough on my stomach. There are also several posts on this on the Infertility forum (since they just recently split TTC and Infertility and all the old TTC posts are still over there). I switched pretty early on from those to Vita Fusion prenatals - they are gummies and very easy on my stomach. I now take the Target brand and like them just the same. I have noticed that my hair is shinier and my nails are so much stronger and grow so much faster! I might switch to a Rx or a different once I'm pregnant. When I was having a rough time with the Rainbows, I asked around and several OBs had recommended Flinstones, which were what I took before TTC. Flinstones have 1/2 the recommended Folic Acid, which is ok, but not as ideal as I'd prefer to be.
